Concerns around food supply and the importation of goods are rising after France banned the entry of UK freight lorries in response to a new strain of Covid-19 identified in the east and southeast of England.
Richard Burnett told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme "fresh food supply where it’s short shelf life and there will be product on its way now, that's where the challenge kind of comes from”.
He added: "The concern that we do have though is that with it being so close to Christmas we're looking at 48 hours at this point in time in terms of the restrictions, we're likely to see Operation Stack building in terms of numbers of vehicles on the UK side and that might be a deterrent for EU hauliers to want to come so close to Christmas and end up being stranded here, that's part of the challenge that we're facing today.
"I think what government are looking at, at this point in time, is actually bringing forward their contingency plans that they'd got laid out for the New Year in terms of [post-Brexit] transition and potentially if we start to see a significant number of vehicles parked on the M20 then we may well actually open up some of the truck parks in Kent, possibly Manston, in order to take high levels of vehicles.

Man, if anyone is watching BBC or Sky News this morning....it’s all doom and gloom. Freaking everyone out. Kinda shocking, their whole logistical network is tied to chunnel trains and truck movement. They are acting like there’s barely five days of food on the isle.
Imagine a war in Europe in which food supplies from France were not pouring into the UK, and shipping to the UK (with more food and other essentials) was being sunk by U-boats.
I imagine Britain would surrender within a week.
Irrational fear makes “leaders” do strange things... Starving their country’s citizens is not new concept to tyrants ... it’s a persistent practice of tyranny.
And the problem is? Isn’t Brexit about borders in the first place?
UK is so flucked . The sun once never set on the Brit Empire ...Now they can’t even take care of themselves ...Sad ..Had many good times there between 1976-1983 when visiting from NY ...Thatcher-era ...Different country ...
Market reacting negatively. goldman is way up though ..might be due to stock buy back news..havent checked yet.
Judging from the pictures of drunk chicks there, there’s ample caloric intake available.
I bet the “new strain” panic will be forgotten by this time next week. Utterly ridiculous hysteria.
Well they do have those tiny little refrigerators.
You ain't kidding. I thought the U.S. had the market cornered on fat chicks, but the U.K. isn't far behind when it comes to large behinds.
Couldn’t see that one coming when last week they were urging people to not panic buy and hoard groceries.
And this happened just as I was beginning to trust the government. (Do I need a /sarc emoji ?)
What I get from Brexit is the ostensible wrinkle is about borders;
but the underlying real reason is national sovereignty, British pound sterling, and surrender to EU authority, which disproportionately favors Germany.
Border is certainly an integral part of national sovereignty.
