President Donald Trump has come so close to firing FBI Director Christopher Wray in recent months that the White House counsel’s office has warned him not to do so because it could put him in potential legal jeopardy, according to a senior administration official with direct knowledge of the discussion and a U.S. official familiar with the discussion.
White House lawyers “strongly” advised Trump against firing another FBI director out of concern that doing so would risk creating the perception that a “loyalty test” was being imposed on a position that traditionally has maintained independence from the White House, according to the senior administration official.
The lawyers, led by White House counsel Pat Cipollone, specifically said that firing Wray could spark legal issues similar to those raised after Trump ousted James Comey as FBI director in 2017 in the midst of the Russia investigation, the officials said.
Their concern was that firing Wray could be seen as retaliation because the president has publicly pressured him to take specific actions on certain investigations — such as announcing a probe into President-elect Joe Biden’s son — and then expressed frustration that Wray has not followed his suggestions.
Trump’s firing of Comey, whom he’d asked to drop an investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, became a key part of the special counsel’s probe into whether he had obstructed justice.
As a result, the president’s legal team advised him against firing Wray, the officials said.

Sounds like more NBC anti-Trump “Coup” crap. Wray is either corrupt or incompetent or a blend of both. He should have been gently “let go’ as the house-cleaning began at the DOJ/FBI.
Dilanian - oh yes. Very trustworthy hit man.
Welker - isn’t she married to some leftist politico/anti-Trumper?
So many corrupt, incompetent or politically far-left journalists that we haven’t got enough jails in which to put all of them in.
Hi.
Would you trust the department of justice or fbi to do something for you or something against you?
Long time ago I had a possible threat to my life on FR. Circa 2007. I contacted the FBI office in Tampa for help. It’s located near Tampa international. Right near Cypress Point park.
They did zero. Bupkis. F’em.
No problem. I took care of it.
5.56mm
And the White House counsel office too.
A position that traditionally maintained independence? Lol. Yea ok. FBI is freakin corrupt as crap. Lost all respect for the agency.
I think that before he leaves office President Trump should fire everyone that he can who was no loyal.
SOLID advice...
The Federal Bureaucracy is full of Democrat partisans, no matter what agency.
Until public sector protections are removed, no Republican President will have any success with political enemies all around D.C.
We need to bring back the patronage system. When we win the White House every Democrat gets fired and replaced with Trump loyalists.
“Wray is probably better than anybody Biden...er, Harris...er, Obama would appoint.”
VERY Sad, but TRUE.
Trump needs to start thinking about self-preservation. The last thing he wants is for Biden to hire a Democrat FBI Director to enact a new round of investigations into Trump. Wray seems more likely to leave Trump and his family alone.
His bigger problem is the People’s Republic of New York. They have a cultish obsession with finding something to charge Trump with even if it is the equivalent of jay-walking. They just want the perp walk video and news stories of Trump being arrested even if the case is as flimsy as tissue paper.
If the White House counsel gave that advice, he should have been fired with Wray.
He’s going to kill er fire Wray last.
I’m assuming this is fake news because any half-assed lawyer who claimed that a position within the executive branch of the U.S. government should “maintain independence from the White House” should be disbarred.
There’s no such thing as a legal impediment to a “loyalty test” when you’re dealing with presidential appointees. They’re SUPPOSED to be loyal to the President who appointed them.
2. Would you even trust those that WOULD? How did that Michael Cohen loser — a perfect example of this — work out for ya?
What are they going to do to Trump? Impeach him?
Yep, there is THAT.
