Formerly, the point of NASA was to explore outer space.

Not to overlook the nuttiness of the overall article, but NASA was founded so that the American government could channel the efforts of American scientists into beating the Commies in the space race and keeping them from gaining a technological advantage over us in a possible nuclear conflict. Space flight was a welcome side effect.
