The NYT starts out with polls and the adjusts as real results come in. Not very accurate early until real votes come in.
So far this year and back in 2016 they all starting swinging towards Trump once they got real votes.

It feels like once they lose Trump to retirement, they will take some losses, if not sooner, such as midterms.

Everyone should keep in mind, democrats had higher early voting numbers, vote counts coming out first will be early voters. For example Florida counts votes as they come in. Republicans voted more in person. Their vote numbers would come in later.
