Trump privately said to donors it will be 'tough' for Republicans to keep Senate

President Donald Trump made a prediction about the GOP's control of the Senate at a fundraiser this week,

"I think the Senate is tough actually. The Senate is very tough," Trump said, according to an attendee who shared the President's comments on condition of anonymity with the Post. "There are a couple senators I can't really get involved in. I just can't do it. You lose your soul if you do. I can't help some of them. I don't want to help some of them."

Trump's comments were made at a closed-door gathering held in Nashville, Tennessee, before the last presidential debate, according to the Post, where he said that he thinks the GOP will "take back the House."

Hours after the Post released its story, Trump told reporters that he hopes the GOP maintains control of the Senate.

"I hope to hold the Senate, we do. I think from a presidential standpoint we're winning a lot of states including this one. I think we're doing very well here. The crowd is certainly enthusiastic. I hope that we do. I think we're gonna take back the House because people are tired of Nancy Pelosi..."

Trump's comments come at a time when Republicans in tight down-ballot races, who had hoped to ride the President's coattails to victory, have little desire to align with him. Several influential Republicans have pleaded with Trump to abruptly change his tactics in the final two weeks to zero-in on an economic message, stop downplaying the coronavirus pandemic and to quit launching attacks against his public health experts -- namely Dr. Anthony Fauci.

... President at times has even seemed to not be interested in saving members of his own party. In Maine, Trump has gone after endangered GOP Sen. Susan Collins...

States like MN, ME, even NY and CA are now in play for POTUS.

MN is in play for sure. In the others, rallies are important if they help to flip the House back out of Witch Pelosi's grasp.

We’ve known this since the beginning of the cycle with so many seats to defend. This is 6 years after the GOP wave of 2014. He’s just stating what we all know.

This is not a news story.

Do we know why Pres Trump is in Nebraska 2 tomorrow? Help the house seat? This district is usually close and they do split the EC like Maine? I have to say what you have is what I have been saying for a while.

it isn’t CNN...it is WASHINGTON POST, by Josh Dawsey and Rachael Bade, and it’s being picked up by Guardian, Fox, UK Times, HuffPo ETC ETC ETC.

that’s the way it works.

If Trump takes VA and NM, those Senate seats may flip to the GOP too.

The most likely change of hands in the senate. Republican Cory Gardner may be out, Make believe Republican Collins of Maine probably out and Democrat Jones in Alabama is a goner. Decent chance Reps may pick up a seat in Michigan and oust Peters the Dem. Come on , man, it’s South Carolina, no way light in the loafers Graham loses. They’re making a big thing of it because his opponent is a black Dem and, as usual, the blacks will be voting racial lines but there’s not enough of them to get their way.

All you need to know about this story is this:

“according to an attendee who shared the President’s comments on condition of anonymity with the Post.”

I had to hold my nose like there is no tomorrow to vote “for” Cornyn in this election.

For me, it was a gag reflex. Like cleaning up vomit and nearly vomiting oneself.

I hope and pray that I never have to do that again.

You *will* have to. Entrenched Senate RINOs are almost impossible to get rid of.

Probably just touching base. I doubt he’ll be back there much at all.

Best guess, GOPe wins 3 of those 4 and ends up +1 in the Senate. I just think it makes sense for the “Purple Trump” states (i.e. voted Nobama then flipped to Trump - assuming he wins MN this time) - the GOPe would then have 1 Senator in each of MI, MN, OH, PA and WI. Consistent with the Presidential voting over 3 cycles.
