San Diego Unified School District Changes Grading System to ‘Combat Racism'
NBC San Diego ^ | October 15, 2020 | Alexis Rivas

Students will no longer be graded based on a yearly average, or on how late they turn in assignments. Those are just some of the major grading changes approved this week by California's second-largest school district.

The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) is overhauling the way it grades students. Board members say the changes are part of a larger effort to combat racism... Academic grades will now focus on mastery of the material, not a yearly average, which board members say penalizes students who get a slow start, or who struggle at points throughout the year.

Another big change, teachers can no longer consider non-material factors when grading. Things like turning work in on time and classroom behavior will now instead count towards a student's citizenship grade, not their academic grade...

The race to the bottom, problem is we are already at 49 out of 57 as far as education goes, not much further to go down

It is pathetic that so many “educators” are liberal nitwits who push the lunacy that’s is liberalism on their students. This is a form of child abuse. These no-integrity “educators” are malignancies.

so you whitey parents can lay off your kids...no reason to make them get their homework done...or attend class even....cram the last week and show “mastery” which I am sure is a very subjective metric...

So....go to school for a year, and then be graded on your one & only test: The Final Exam!

Somehow I doubt this would help minority students....

Okay, so how will they determine mastery of material? Actual correct answers or attempts at the correct answer? Also, if a student can't turn in their assignment on time, tough shit. I don't care what their poor wittle home situation is. Either do what is assigned on time, or lose points.

But then, the Teacher can just give them a trophy for at least turning in the assignment, no matter how late.

Everywhere you look, America is turning towards mediocre standards. We use to strive for excellence in all. Sorry, but not all are high enough of the Bell Curve to succeed in Ivy League schools. We still need trades men, and most make a decent living while the Harvard graduate is living in Mom's basement or on the streets whining and rioting how unfair life is.

My sympathy factor is reaching ZERO.

Academic grades will now focus on mastery of the material,

I have no problem with that as long as the testing for mastery is the same for all.

Unfortunately nowadays the “soft bigotry of low expectations” takes everyone down, not just the lefts political pawns.

penalizes students who get a slow start, or who struggle at points throughout the year.

What do these have to do with "race"?

Academic grades will now focus on mastery of the material.

Grades are racist, so tests are racist. How does one assess Mastery of Material?
LBGTQ, black, latino, Muslim? Go to the head of the class.
White, asian, Christian? Failing grade and permanent suspension for systemic racism.

So how is “mastery” determined? Is there a TEST? So does that mean they will “teach to the test” to achieve “mastery”? And don’t they HATE “teaching to the test”?

But I need a ditchdigger who show up on time, so I won't be hiring one from San Diego.

I’m a teacher. Nothing new here. We’ve watered down grading since Obummer took over. Face the facts; if I look over my roster and see more than 5 La-dashiniqua names I know that class is doomed and my year just got a hell of a lot longer. Can’t do anything to them, no consequences, can’t fail them. It’s a nightmare.

All brown folks? Y’all immediately pass every day every grade every subject and you don’t even need to show up . You white folks? Y’all be racist so we don’t even look at you. Yeah. Not a problem 🙄
