Protesters pulled down a controversial war monument in the heart of the Santa Fe Plaza Monday afternoon during an Indigenous Peoples' Day demonstration.
Around two dozen protesters were seen using straps to pull down two sections of the obelisk.
Local business owner Jorsiak Borchers described how the scene unfolded.
"There were a group of people dressed in black, and they began to climb the monument in the center of the Santa Fe Plaza. They threw a rope around it. Cheers and applause of everyone to tear it down. A lot of cop cars came quickly into town. A lot do them. Within ten minutes they left and disappeared," Borchers said. "Only a minute or two later the monument in the center or the plaza came tumbling down. They were cheering happy really excited about it. There were also other bystanders that were not as excited about what was happening."

Law enforcement officers armed with nonlethal weapons blocked off the obelisk while bulldozers cleaned up the rest of the rubble.
The monument was built in 1868 for New Mexico Union soldiers who fought in the Civil War. On one face of the monument there's a dedication to heroes who died in wars with Native Americans.
At one point, the inscription on the monument referred to Native Americans as savages, but that word has since been chiseled out.
The attempts to remove the obelisk in the past have been complicated by the plaza's status as a National Historic Landmark.
Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber posted a video to Facebook in response to the incident.
"I want to condemn in the strongest possible termsthe violence that broke out on the plaza today that led to the wanton destruction of the obelisk," the mayor said. "That is not how we do things in Santa Fe. It is not only a violation of the law, it is a violation of the ties between people in our community. There is no place in Santa Fe for people taking the law into their own hands, and there is no place for people, destroying historic monuments on their own."
The Santa Fe City Council held an emergency meeting to discuss how police officers responded and what might happen to people who pulled down the 152-year-old obelisk
"There's plenty of video around us. I am sure everyone has seen. We have video of people pulling down the obelisk. People who were on it. Are we prepared to press charges against those people?" said Santa Fe City Councilman Chris Rivera (District 3).
Police said they made two arrested at the protest. Dylan Wrobel, 27, was charged with battery on a peace officer and resisting arrest and Sean Sunderland, 27, was charged with resisting an officer and criminal trespassing.
The number of people who want to willfully and happily censor and erase history because it offends them is astounding.
As there is no will to prosecute such crimes across the nation they will continue, just as Donald Trump predicted. They’ve already come after the founding fathers just as Donald Trump predicted.
But in each county this is considered to be a local news item and not some nationally coordinated series of events.
They would just as gleefully burn books and purge people.
I don’t understand, did the police cone and then just leave?
According to fibber Wray, the antifa people aren’t organized. They’re just an idea.
indigenous cats matter
Yes.
Olbermann said we need to be murdered after the election.
But people who want the constitution upheld, laws and borders enforced are an existential threat according to Wray as well.
Rioters not protesters.
We need to change the language.
Put the truth in parentheses in every headline.
Apparently so. I find it especially curious that the only arrests were of 2 ppl who attacked or assaulted the cops. I guess the ppl really are on their own nowadays.
How many statues and monuments being torn down or destroyed by protestors are being restored? From what I can tell none, certainly not here in NC. To recap:
1). Protestors tear down public property. Police do not stop them.
2). In most cases no arrests at the direction of local officials.
3). Even if there are arrests, charges are dropped.
4). In some cases local official, and even governors (Roy Cooper NC) are removing statues and monuments on their own authority for public safety.
5). The public at large is accepting the destruction quietly. Protests by citizens are few and attributed by the media to right wing racist extremists. Most citizens appear to be accepting the new status quo meekly and continue to go about their business without complaining. As a result government officials are becoming fully aligned with the left, its agenda, and its violence.
6). In a few weeks between 48 and 50% of the electorate will vote for a cadaver and a woman who slept her way into political office. Qualifications do not matter. Half the nation does not even have minimal standards for elected officials.
7). The left is winning.
So you are a believer of the polls put out by and in conjunction with the media?
Really?
Sad.
“The left is winning.”
In the words of DJT: Wrong!
The left has become the establishment in some ways, but theirs is a movement that:
is old and decrepit. They do not have the capability to run a good candidate. Their values are so bad that candidates that come up through their system are terrible. It continues with the dementia-addled cadaver.
is of the things THEY hate. Corporate sponsoring of various parts of their “movements” indicate they are the accepted norm one 30 second ad at a time. Wanna feel good about your radical azz values? Here, watch this. Hmmm, now its gone - back to being a wretched totalitarian wannabe.
is to the point of full breakdown. All of the problems with being the two-faced hypocrites they are. all the problems of being valueless wretches do not go away with the plastic “wins” they seek.
May God bring about their full and total collapse before too many decent Americans are impacted. And may many decent Americans remain engaged with the defeat of these wretches until America is saved from this long in the tooth self-imposed travesty in which the left finds itself.
And once again, the compliant and complicit police let it happen.
JoMa
Because uncontroversial monuments are rarely pulled down by violent mobs.

Damn glad I don’t live in SF.
And why taxpayers there are paying for a PD is beyond me.
I’m waiting for a city to really save money by truly defunding the police and just telling citizens to take the law into their own hands and deal with problems as they see fit.
Because I think you’d get extremely low crime rates after a few weeks. (But those first few weeks would see a lot of trash taken out.)
Santa Fe has a nasty crime problem.
Easy to see why.
