Today brings with it yet another “the First Amendment can be suspended in the name of ‘safety'” story, and it might not surprise you to know that it has something to do with California authorities removing a “TRUMP” sign:
Maybe the Trump supporter should have instead put the sign ON the highway and called it a protest:
Local authorities said that because the sign was on private property, it was just taken down but not removed:
Lauren Wonder, chief public information officer for Caltrans, told the Los Angeles Times that the sign was on private property.
For that reason, Wonder said, Caltrans workers “laid it down so it wasn’t a visual distraction” but did not completely remove the sign, which was noticed at about 7 a.m.
“This was a life and safety issue because there were concerns about distracted driving,” Wonder said.

One of the marathons I did that was the most fun had signs along the route. They’d have a trivia question on the first, then a mile or so later, another with the answer. Then another question a mile later and so on.
It reminded me of the Burma Shave signs, and they really took my mind off the passage of the miles during the race.
No, but maybe it should disappear along with others during “mostly peaceful” protests.

I will attest that they ARE distracting.
Maybe not for the content, but for the visual distraction of movement in the peripheral vision, causing momentary eyeball diversion from the (speedy, packed full) freeway, where full attention is necessary.

Your great line of thought should apply to any vineyard in Sonoma, Napa, Solano County that didn’t burn up in the latest Enviro fires. The unburnt vineyards in October are beautiful but distracting and dangerous.
