A federal judge says the IRS can't keep withholding coronavirus relief payments from incarcerated people, potentially clearing the way for at least 80,000 checks totaling more than $100 million to be sent to people behind bars across the United States.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton late last month gives the IRS until Oct. 24 to reconsider the payments for those who were denied or had their money intercepted solely because of their incarceration.

If they owe restitution to their victims, let it go toward that.

I seem to remember the IRS flagged my banking because I was part of the TEA party and no judge did a thing.

Not every prisoner is tasked with restitution requirements. If not then the IRS has no business keeping the money.

Never forget that the IRS is a corrupt and evil bureaucracy.

I always love how the media pronounces the voice of God from these crappy brain addled judges.

So judges are now running the country? SCOTUS needs to put a stop to lower level judges that issue decrees that affect the whole country else why do we need the SCOTUS.

Phyllis seems to be high on the Nitwit Scale. Use those funds to pay for their incarceration.

Seriously? The payments are to help people through the shutdown where they have no income because they can’t go to work. Last I saw, prisoners do not have outside jobs and everything is provided (food, medical etc). So, they have no justification for getting the funds.

If they qualify for the funds as the law is written then you should argue with the idiots who wrote the law.

I count taxpayers as their victims, as well. After all, we’re paying the tab for their stay.

Any money they get should be reimbursed to the state for their incarceration.

This is nonsense

Prisoner’s basic needs are met in prison, and COVID-19 has
not changed that.

The original rules specifically forbid inmates for collecting the $1200 stimulus checks.

What is going on that 80,000 checks were issued, out of a prison population of over 1,000,000?

That just might be the stupidest ruling this year - and that’s going some, given the number of boneheaded decisions handed out year to date.

Silly me, I thought that the checks were to help people get through the tough times caused by the economic downturn. How in the world are inmates harmed? They already get 3 hots & a cot. What more do they need?

Some bad math in this article.

Suffice to say that the judge and the lawyer are conspiring to force the executive branch to pay out stimulus checks to all inmates.

In the interest of ? ... a softer head than normal in judges?

Don’t care about the sob stories about how expensive it is for prisoners to cal. That is the fault of collusion between the County and the prison phone companies.
