Contractors who are replacing the border wall in Arizona are dumping leftover debris in Mexico, where scrap metal dealers are profiting off the pieces, witnesses told local television stations KOB4 and CBS 5.
The witnesses an ecologist who works in the desert region in Southern Arizona and people selling the metal online told CBS 5 that the contractors are essentially giving away the old wall.
"There were DHS and Army Corps of Engineers officials, standing there watching their contractors with a bulldozer and front-end loaders push the scrap metal onto the Mexican side," Gary Nabhan, a desert ecologist, told the station. "And Mexican scrap metal scavengers were coming right up to the border."
..."All of that metal and concrete should have been carried away to Phoenix or Tucson where there's legal disposal sites or recycling centers none of it should have been pushed into Mexico," Nabhan said.
.... The station reported that Southwest Valley Constructors is the company that won the contract to erect the border fence near Naco and appears to be the source of steel posts being collected in Sonoyta, Mexico, as well.
Customs and Border Protection is investigating, a spokesperson told CBS5.
Speaking of making money:
How much are the ChiComs paying to post this anti Trump Garbage?
I don’t know the cost of this, but maybe it is the least expensive way to dispose of the debris.
Depends on how the contract was written.
Better they take the scrap wall pieces than the catalytic converter off of my other vehicle.
They already got the one off of my truck while parked in South Carolina.
It would cost more to haul it than it’s worth. If the Mexicans will clean up and make 10$ a ton who cares?
scrap metal is cheap, doesn’t pay to haul it away. Let Mexico do it and make a little money.
So?
The wall gets replaced. US Taxpayers don’t have to pay to deal with the debris. Mexican scrappers make a few bucks. The desert floor gets cleaned-up.
I don’t see a problem here.
The cost of doing that is probably more than the $$ which the scrap will generate. Most business' don't do things to lose money.
Let’s see, sell it to Mexico or pay to have it recycled. Tough choice.
My regular, paying metals recycler won't take steel, but there are mexican freelancers that will take it for free.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Exactly. Great post.
If this is (a very minimal) part of the cost to build an effective wall, I am fine with it.
Part of (The Art Of) the deal, with Mexico. ????
Trump playing 4D chess again.
Exactamundo, but don’t let petty details like that mess up a good Orange-Man-Bad hit piece!
The contractors are probably making a ton of money

Oh, the horror!

I occasionally put boxes of low value scrap on the curb. It’s always gone within a few hours. I don’t know if it’s Mexicans, but whoever is willing to take it are welcome to it.
That said, I can safely say that nothing I read in the article is unusual in the course of construction demolition.
If the contractors were to dispose and recycle the demolished materials, they would have to pay laborers, truck drivers, etc, to do so. Those added costs get passed onto the taxpayer since this is a government job.
Giving it to the messycans sounds like a pretty cheap way to get rid of trash.
Most likely true....probably giving it away free to anyone willing to haul it off...we’re talking rusty iron...not exactly a gold mine!!!!
