The Nation, a storied left-wing magazine, pondered the possibility of secession in an interview published Tuesday morning.
The idea has been circulating on the left over the past few weeks, as Democrats ponder the possibility of President Donald Trump being re-elected. Though many mainstream media polls show former Vice President Joe Biden with a lead, the polls have been wrong before and Trump is running a confident, energetic campaign, while Biden is barely leaving his house.
The interview, Should the United States Stay United?, conducted by Jessica Suriano with Richard Kreitner, author of Break It Up: Secession, Division, and the Secret History of Americas Imperfect Union, focuses on the idea that secession need not be tarnished by slavery. Abolitionists, Kreitner argues, also considered seceding from the Union and progressives should consider it today:
JESSICA SURIANO: Why did you think it was important in this book to address all of these other separatist movements that have happened in the past and across the political spectrum?
RICKY KREITNER: Of course everybodys heard about the Confederacy and slavery, and it started my historical research, but thats not really where the book came from. It came from this late-Obama-era moment where the thought occurred to me just based on things Id been reading: What if the United States broke apart? Would that be such a bad thing? Is it possible that the progressive policies and programs that I wanted to see put into place might be easier to enact in a smaller entity than the United States, with its 330 million people and the need to always convince people with very different attitudes and interests? So with that question...

If democrat hellholes want to leave the Union - who would want to stop them? They get to take all the antifa and BLM rioters with them? Works for me.
You do know there are parts of the country where you can see a yard full of Biden signs and then next door a yard full of Trump signs.
That is why the first Civil War often became the war of neighbor against neighbor, particularly in border states.
Just one example—Maryland was technically in the Union, but Lincoln closed down the main Baltimore newspaper because of its vocal support for the Confederacy:

Irreconcilable differences See Ya. I’m going to Mars and you want to burn down what?
Bye.
Adios.
Don’t forget your passport when you try to go from Illinois to NY or California.
Please leave the union blue states, you have my blessing. Go for it.
No, they get whole states. It you don’t like it leave. m Otherwise there will be war when one is unnecessary.
An excellent idea, provided that the separation is complete. No legal ties. Different laws. Different currencies. BORDERS!
Plus, all the non-earning slackers go to the left side, and the productive earners go on the right side. Anyone who complains goes to the left side. Anyone who complains the USA is racist goes to the left side. All “immigrants” from the middle east go to the left side.
The halves would be divided by the great big mass in the center. The left would have its capital in downtown Portland Oregon. The Right in Columbia South Carolina.
In about 2 years the left side would be Venezuela/Somalia. And we, the normal people, wouldn’t have to hear accusations of “White Privilege.”
No. WHOLE STATES secede. If there are divisions inside of CA later on then them fight it out among themselves.
Thats how I could envision a geographic basis for civil war. Divisions within blue States...pro-and anti-secession. Youd better believe that 75% or more of the populated land-mass in CA, OR, and WA want nothing to do with forced separation from the USA. See the various iterations of State of Jefferson, or Greater Idaho proposals of the last 50 years.
We either have a “clean” secession state by state or we go to war. I prefer the former over the later.
For years, there’s been an undercurrent of making a new state from eastern Washington, northern Idaho, a chunk of western Montana, and the northern part of eastern Oregon.
Those areas vote very differently from the rest of the states they’re part of. I have heard that some want to name it “Cascadia”.
If it’s ever taken seriously, I’d pack up my wife and kids and move there, even if we have to live out of our minivan.
What if the United States broke apart? Would that be such a bad thing? Is it possible that the progressive policies and programs that I wanted to see put into place might be easier to enact in a smaller entity than the United States, with its 330 million people and the need to always convince people with very different attitudes and interests?
So this guy is frustrated, at the “need to always convince people with very different attitudes and interests” about how liberalism is superior?
He doesn’t want to have any debate or discussion. He and his ilk just want to dictate from on high. No need for messy elections and campaigns. No need to convince or persuade anyone about anything. People like this want to rule by decree.
Good riddance. We won’t be sending troops anytime soon to welcome them back. We will build a super walled highway direct from Mexico to the United Sanctuary States to flood their zone and let them choke on their faux virtue.
Cant be done, because the communists in LA, SF, Seattle, and Portland
would give the communist Chinese bases on US soil. China is licking its
chops.
As soon as you travel north of woodland up into northern CA, its heavily
conservative. Trump flags, trump 2020 painted on tractor trailer rigs,
trump bumper stickers and farmers for trump signs off of I-5. If the
large cities tried to take the entire state they would have a bloody
fight on their hands.
Democrat party tombstone now being placed.
There is no need for this! We need to go back to the founding principal of the United States. Where the States, not the Federal Government, was primary. Get rid of the 17th Amendment, and all departments that directly effect the people (HUD, Education, for example). In other words States Rights.
Everyone here is right. CA would fail. Its already broke but if it were on its
own and tried to maintain the direction it is currently going, it would fail
spectacularly. The problem is who would be the first entity on its doorstep
offering “help”?
CHINA
And CA would welcome their “HELP” with open arms.
