Ohio Southern District Court Judge Michael H. Watson rejected voter advocates’ request to suspend rules in a Sunday order.
Judge Watson was appointed by President George W. Bush, beginning service as a Judge of The United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio on October 1, 2004.
Ohio’s rules for matching signatures on absentee ballots to those on file are burdensome for voters but not enough to change them ahead of the Nov. 3 election
Judge Watson agreed with Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose that the process ensures integrity in the state’s election procedures.
Watson wrote that changing the rules a little more than a month from Election Day would be “particularly damaging.”
“Some public officials have unfortunately regularly cast doubt on the security and legitimacy of voting by mail. A federal court enjoining part of the State’s procedure for maintaining the security of mail-in voting in the weeks leading up to the election could further undermine public confidence in elections.”
The lawsuit was brought by the League of Women Voters of Ohio, the A. Philip Randolph Institute of Ohio and two Ohio voters whose primary ballots didn’t count because of mismatched signatures.

While I often am in support of protect the vote type legislation... the signature thing is tuff for me personally because honestly my signature can vary dramatically.
Of course I would never vote by mail, so it doesn’t really matter in the end.

Somebody please tell me how it is burdensome for the voter to sign their ballot?
I have a family member who is a former federal agent. The problem, according to her, is that even an FBI “expert” will never state to a court that a signature does or does not belong to a particular person. They will him and haw around the subject with words like “probably.”
The idea that somebody chosen by the elections board can make a comparison and say definitively that a signature does or does not belong to somebody who signed the original card twenty years ago is ridiculous.
I have no choice, there are no polls to go to in Oregon. I too have a problem with my signature, it changes. About every 4 years I go into the registar’s office and update my signature.
Our county is actually pretty good about keeping these things updated since workers in our precinct and others in the county actually care about doing their jobs right.
Actually, this ruling benefits the Democrats. How hard is it to sign your ballot with an “X”?
It can vary...but you also have ID with you if they reject it.
Don't you love the left and the way they name things. Everything is the opposite of the name, like the Affordable Healthcare Act. Voter advocates, my ass.
And if they go up the ladder to the next federal court, the GOP has an 11-5 advantage over the Dems

well, like I said I always vote in person so yes, it’s never mattered because I could just show my ID and voter registration card, ect.
But “if” I were to vote by mail, it “might” be an issue.

I tend to agree. I can see where democrat officials will be throwing out republicans ballots by the thousands. I think a copy of your ID should work well enough.
However, it’s up to the legislators to change, not the court.
That's sort of the rub, isn't it. I bet your county has no attempted voter fraud, because the people are decent Americans and follow the law. It probably applies to many other things, like going through a background check to buy a gun because it is the law, not because it is really needed and you have criminals running amok committing nonsensical gun violence. My point being, decent people don't need the laws. Where there are no decent people these laws are needed, but not followed.
agree...but look at it another way....they could just toss your Trump vote saying it doesn’t match. I believe they do know whether you are R or D when they check your signature.
I would rather the judge have ruled theConstitution gives State legislatures ALONE dominion over election rules, and that judges, thus, have no authority to intervene.

Since all federal election voting in Oregon is by mail, there must be no allowable tally of Oregon votes permitted for the House, the Senate, or the President.
Oregon has in effect seceded from the union and thus has no say in who can be elected or in the administration of the Federal government. As a citizen of Oregon, so far as federal elections are determined, you don’t count

I have two signatures. The one I use to sign official personal documents, checks etc is rather elaborate and I hope, harder to fake. The one I use at work to sign checks and documents related to work is simpler to save the strain on my thumbs.
