Berkeley in northern California will ban the sale of junk food from supermarket checkout displays -- becoming the first US city to do so, according to local media.

The city council unanimously passed a bill this week to promote healthier eating, by prohibiting products with over 5 grams of added sugar or 250mg of sodium from checkout aisles.

Drinks high in sugar and artificial sweeteners will also be restricted.

"The healthy checkout ordinance is essential for community health, especially in the time of COVID-19," said councilmember Kate Harrison.

"What is good for Berkeley customers is also good for our businesses."

Her choice was about giving the kids a healthy snack.

Back in the 1950’s in San Francisco we had a candy store two blocks from our house. Jars of candy on the counters, in display cases, and on shelves on the walls. All for pennies. Candy dots on paper rolls, and licorice, buy it by the foot. An alternative healthy choice was a pickle barrel by the door with large dill pickles for a nickel each.

I usually buy most of the RC at my local grocery store.

What times I’ve had to deal with a person at checkout, they didn’t know it was carried.

“...prohibiting products with over 5 grams of added sugar or 250mg of sodium from checkout aisles...”

Is that per package, or per serving size? Crappy reporting, or just that the city council didn’t think about it? Because all you have to do is raise the serving sizes, or, sell smaller sizes of junk food to get around this useless control freak rule. I used to eat a lot of candy. One day I just decided to stop. I rarely, if ever, bought it on impulse in a checkout aisle. I sought it out. And then I stopped. My choice. Not the stores’, not the government’s.

Most of the checkers where I go know the merchandise pretty well — I’ll give them that.

No, no. They’ll love it because:
“What is good for Berkeley customers is also good for our businesses.”

I’m not sure how decreasing sales will be good for retailers. I guess that’s why I’m not on the city council.

Draining and rinsing canned beans reduces sodium about 40%. That makes it not a bad food cuz high in protein and fiber. I add them to salads.
