Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.), perhaps unsatisfied with the misery of rolling blackouts to which ill-considered climate restrictions have subjected Californians, has ordered that no new gas-powered cars shall be sold in California beginning in the year 2035. What could possibly go wrong?
California “is phasing out the internal combustion engine,” the governor tweeted in announcing his sweeping executive order. “By 2035 every new car sold in CA will be an emission free vehicle. Cars shouldnt give our kids asthma. Make wildfires worse. Melt glaciers. Or raise sea levels.”
NEW: Were facing a climate crisis.
We need bold action.

Newsom’s executive order requires that “sales of all new passenger vehicles” must be “zero-emission by 2035.” Through the order, Newsom directed the Air Resources Board to develop regulations to ensure that “all operations of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles shall be 100 percent zero emission by 2045 where feasible.”
The governor’s office claimed that the transportation sector is responsible for more than half of California’s carbon pollution, 80 percent of smog-forming pollution, and 95 percent of “toxic diesel emissions.”
“This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change,” Newsom said in a statement. “For too many decades, we have allowed cars to pollute the air that our children and families breathe. Californians shouldnt have to worry if our cars are giving our kids asthma. Our cars shouldnt make wildfires worse

The EO, as nuts as it is, only prohibits the sale of new cars that are not zero emissions. It doesnt address gas stations and the like.
Well, zero emissions excludes internal combustion.
So why not drive to Vegas to buy your new V8 Tahoe?
See the federal implications?
This is hysterical. Newsom cannot govern 15 years into the future, unless he plans to stay the governor that long.
Another governor will come along, perhaps even one with some common sense, and write an executive order of his own.
They are going to need rising sea levels to clean all the vomit, urine and fecal matter off the streets.
Make all of CA walk.
I wish he’d phase out gravity, too. That would simplify my vacation cruise to Mars.
For June 2020, they generated equal amounts of wind/solar and natural gas electricity, plus nuclear and hydro. So well over 50% renewable: http://www2.eia.gov/state/?sid=CA#tabs-4 They imported power as you pointed out, more energy than the wind/solar (see consumption by source page).
Their imports come from Oregon as you said, but Oregon is mostly hydro. (click on state at the top of the page). But a much bigger exporter to California (by 3x) is Arizona which is mostly gas, coal and nuclear.
I doubt their net use of renewables is as low as 10%, probably more like 25% However the numbers on that page I linked are a good month (June) when they don't have to rely on gas as much. The best metric on that page is consumption by source by year (2018) That shows natural gas usage, not just electricity, but also heating, far exceeding anything else. And it shows imports of electricity (mostly fossil) exceeding renewables.
Why not exactly? Im simply pointing out what the EO is and what it is not. Its very unlikely the thing will last 15 months, let alone 15 years.
Maybe so. But the rolling blackouts from lack of renewables last an hour or two. The multi-day blackouts are due to fire prevention which is a different problem. They do have some of the highest rates in America, 50% higher than the national average, 75% higher for commercial and 130% higher for industry. They are a post-industrial state, but that doesn't mean they can't be fat dumb and happy using their smart phones. Those will certainly last through an hour or two rolling blackout.
The sky has been so brown that it booted out the sun at high noon for over a month in Nevada. I will bet that the CO2 coming from the burning mismanaged forests is equivalent to 50 years of CO2 from all 50 states combined. I think I can estimate it from satellite images. I dont know why we cant sue them
Good question. If he's taking on some new authority that hasn't been granted to him, no. But if he's implementing some discretionary authority given to the executive by some other law, maybe.
He doesn’t have a clue how many ‘donkey engines’ are all over California-—irrigating fields.
They run on fossil fuels, and water fields.
YOU KNOW what fields are: Those expanses of land that California uses to GROW SO MUCH FOOD FOR THE USA......
I don’t think the IA scale goes LOW enough for Newsom.
I drive a 1979 Buick station wagon & I tow my horses with my 12976 1 tin Chevy dually truck.
I left Calif over 15 years ago, but those vehicles are still MY transportation.
I have been told that those car chargers require 240 volts.
I don’t know how my household power set up can handle that.
ALSO——The ENTIRE POWER GRID in the nation is what it is-—Can it handle all this ‘charging’ demand???
At an apartment complex——2 cars per apartment-—2 CHARGING SYSTEMS??? WHO PAYS FOR ALL THAT POWER???
If you really believes in it and let him do it now, when he’s governor.
Good questions. I think you are OK for the 240 Volts because that is what your dryer and cooktop run on but they will have to create receptacles to plug in your vehicles.
Gavin, where is the $1.4 billion you stole?
Imagine the brush fires PLUS the garage/homes burning from the 240 volts and more amps to the shoddy install of a home charging unit let alone Tesla’s igniting on their own.
We really need a mental test for anyone running for office. This of course means no democrats would ever be elected again : )
Great time-saver Now they don’t have to invent anything- just demand it by edict. /s
