Emphasizing that California must stay at the forefront of the fight against climate change, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday issued an executive order to restrict new car sales in the state to only zero-emission vehicles by 2035 ***
Under Newsoms order, the California Air Resources Board would implement the phase-out of new gas-powered cars and light trucks and also require medium and heavy-duty trucks to be zero-emission by 2045 where possible. California would be the first state in the nation to mandate 100% zero-emission vehicles, though 15 countries already have committed to phasing out gas-powered cars.
*** Cars, trucks and other vehicles are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in California, accounting for about 40% of the statewide total, and their emissions have been stubbornly creeping upward in recent years. Driving down transportation pollution remains the states biggest challenge in achieving its goal of slashing planet-warming emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030.
Under current regulations, Californias Air Resources Board requires automakers to sell electric, fuel cell and other zero-emission vehicles in increasing percentages through 2025. Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 7.6% new car
This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change, Newsom said in a statement released Wednesday morning. Our cars shouldnt make wildfires worse and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldnt melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines.
Newsom said that Californias action will help spur greater innovation for zero-emission vehicles and, by creating a huge market, will drive down the cost of those cars and trucks. More than 1.63 million new cars and trucks are expected to be sold in the state in 2020, according to the California New Car Dealers Assn.

Total half measure.
Newsome needs to ban airplanes.
One more reason to flee from California.
Thats exactly right. For there to be a lot of electric cars, new generation capacity has to be built.
>>By fiat!<<
I owned one. It was the X 1/9 which looked cool but after a few years broke down all the time.
This only keeps people from traveling freely, or makes it much more difficult and time consuming.
Venezuelans are riding donkeys.
Californians are ruled by an ass.
My first thoughts exactly.
Also does that mean you can’t drive a gas powered car from Arizona?
The Socialists, with the full support of the mind numbed degree holders, will destroy America as we know it.
....built by Mazda.
Time to invest in dealerships in Oregon, Nevada and Arizona near the California border and "Very Slightly Used" car lots selling cars for above new car MSRP.
Although I expect that California would outlaw that too, if they haven't already.
How’s the recall going?
Car dealers near the Cali border in AZ and NV are in favor of this.
Notice how he wants to pass these things off to some future governor, because he knows it would be bad if it happened on his watch.
Yep.
Trump needs to clean out the EPA’s proggies, then have it assign pollution factors to charging e-cars. Carbon per kw/hour or some such.
Wait until The Gav becomes Amerika’s Leader. I will tap out. Good luck, lemmings.
I just love how liberals make nonsensical demands with far-in-the-future deadlines.
I think Ill give it a go. I demand that by 2035 all forks have five tines. Its for the children. And its for the environment.
Thank you WHISTLEDICK Newsom!
Ha! My mom owned a Fiat x19 and it was always in the shop. She always said FIAT meant “Fix It Again Tony.”
I wanted to see what it drove like and it was fun to drive. It was pink so I didn’t want to be seen in it. :-)
