Your walk is as unique as your fingerprint and harder to hide than your face. Now governments and companies are waking up to the power of gait analysis
LIAM GALLAGHER, formerly of the band Oasis, tends to stroll with a roll to his shoulders. John Waynes slow swagger has been linked to everything from a misaligned leg to small feet. Some say Vladimir Putins distinctive shuffle is thanks to KGB weapons training that encouraged operatives to dampen the swing of one arm to keep it closer to their gun.
Considering that walking is such an everyday function of a bipedal species, it is incredible that we find so many different ways to do it. Perhaps thats why our gaits and what they say about us are so fascinating. It takes dozens of muscles working together throughout the body to put one foot in front of the other. These subtle patterns of muscular flexes and strains are highly distinctive, so much so that scientists who study gait increasingly believe they are as unique to you as your fingerprint.

Have you ever seen a woman switch from high heels to flats?
Footwear can alter your gait.
My first thought upon reading the headline. Humans dont inherently like being spied upon. Now we know they are watching, so we can adjust. Silly walks can do the trick.
This is in the news now because this will be a large part of how the “LA cop shooter” will be found out and arrested.
Likely another week or so.
I have been a racewalk judge and coach for over 30 years and can identify slight limps and leans and arm swing differentials and whatever in anyone. And I certainly recognize the gait of those that I work with regularly. Can easily imagine this being assessed through software and used to identify.
Oh, mrs. jimfree regularly recognizes my presence in a crowd by my laugh or my cough. And she probably recognizes my gait, either while racewalking or strolling.
Isn’t there a DEPARTMENT OF SILLY WALKS??
When it identifies members of a certain ethnicity better than plain whitebreads, it will be banned.
I am near-sighted, so without glasses I can’t make out faces down a long hallway, but gait plus shape are distinctive. And in my household, the three men all sound quite different going up the stairs.
They don’t have a database to compare against yet, if you were expecting gait analysis to be a tool for this. But you can compare gaits between two video examples to point at a suspect.
Facial analysis and fingerprint analysis already have *several* databases to match against. Starting with state ID and driver’s licenses databases and going from there. The former is why conservatives should be masking at public events or when defending property/people - not because of COVID (though that would be the excuse if asked), but to prevent BLM/AntiFa from doxxing you and attacking you or your family/friends. If you don’t think that was important, ask the former bar owner killed by/driven to suicide by doxxing tactics.
Gait analysis isn’t new, it’s been around a while. Reportedly/rumoredly, it has been used by various government entities (not just in the US) to attempt to screen out impostors at secure facilities for many years.
Correct, but just as modern facial recognition systems can identify people despite makeup and prosthetics, even cheek stuffing, modern gait analysis systems can (reportedly) identify a woman (or, one supposes, a man) despite shoe-inflicted changes.
Unlikely, no database for comparison.
However... it *is* likely to be used against persons recorded in the riot zones. Whether that is defenders or rioters is yet to be seen.
A bit self-referential on the part of Genesis. On a much earlier hit they have the line: "Me? I'm just a lawnmower. You can tell me by the way I walk."
confirmation that we are spied upon
Yeah, I read somewhere that Toe flopers really goofed up the identification by gait thing.. That was a long time ago.
We have a video of the shooter running away from the scene.
It’s enough to match with CCTV and home security video in the neighborhood.
Not necessarily. Gait recognition requires fairly high resolution imagery, and most CCTV/security cams aren’t quite there. Most are NTSC resolution (less than 640x480) though that’s changing.
Also, even if it was good enough, all you could do is trace where they went, not establish identity. Once they get in a vehicle or out of camera range, they’re gone.
Um.... that’s been a thing in the aftermath of lawsuit lotto and unlimited sexual harassment charges in the 90s.
