I’ve told my story before and won’t repeat it all (you’re welcome, everybody) but I, too, delivered campus mail in the City of Detroit for Wayne State University offices prof. homes and dorms for about 2 1/2 years. During third day of the July, 1967 riots and after, with National Guard on the mail truck running board with his rifle at a 45 degree angle as he scanned for snipers above. Always said “I’ll cover you but keep watching for those snipers.”
Seemed exciting to a college kid.

Detroit was a little more violent during the riot than usual but not by that much.

In spite of all that, and you’re 100% correct on the origins of the problem, the timing of this appeal by the postal carriers is odd indeed. Or maybe not so.
