Graham Payne-Reichert logged onto Zoom from a lawn chair in the backyard of his unofficial fraternity house, surrounded by three other members of Delta Tau Delta and a futon that had mysteriously snapped in half a few months before.
He watched faces appear one by one on his screen first his former roommate, then his Spikeball teammate, then the older fraternity brother who had put him at ease during a hard transition to American University just two years ago.
It was one month after the killing of George Floyd and Payne-Reichert, vice president of his fraternity, kicked off a virtual meeting that would break up the chapter he once adored.
For two hours, the virtual group of 26 men discussed the lack of diversity in their fraternity chapter and the Instagram pages that shared anonymous accounts of racism and sexual assault at their school. The meeting ended with a unanimous vote to disband the chapter of Delta Tau Delta.

"Who dropped a whole truckload of fizzies into the varsity swim meet? Who delivered the medical school cadavers to the alumni dinner? Every Halloween, the trees are filled with underwear. Every spring, the toilets explode."
As I recall, frats were fading in the mid 70s too. Then “Animal House” came out and it rejuvenated them.
That bump only lasted about 10 years. Frat culture has but evaporated.
The Greek life on campus has been targeted for decades by the administration. Wonder if they have notice the decline of giving from those that belonged?
The young are inclined to destroy rather than fix or improve. No opportunity for repentance. No mercy for past sins. This country is being primed for judgment.
If they only had 26 members, I can see why the chapter failed.
When I was a pledge in 1976, they told us that the greek letter fraternities first came into being because speech was not so free on campus in the 19th century. They would gather to discuss the hot topics, and had the handshakes, etc to protect themselves. As things loosened up, they morphed into social clubs. They way things are going, we could very well see frats reconstituted for their original purpose.
I think these guys are worried about being canceled for being a frat boy, and are just taking precautionary measures.
The Tri-Lambs led the way...
At UC Berkeley we were part of the co-op system and we laughed at the frat boys
They came to our parties
So, will the Black fraternities and sororities disband as well?
I knew a guy in college with AEPi. He was a total stuck up asshole. But then another guy on my floor pledged with them, and he was OK.
One of my roommates successfully pledged Theta Chi. He was one of the best people I knew at college, and a good friend.
The guys I knew from Sigma Epsilon were cool, too.
Zeta Psi.
Mine too
We had shirts with the letters Gamma Delta Iota
We had to cancel our annual gathering scheduled for last saturday
lol. More like racist mob destruction and inflaming senseless entitlement.
A bunch of guys started a GDI chapter at App. They pitched in $100 each to party with and the treasurer ran off with the money.
