Steelers offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva chose to cover the name of police shooting victim Antwon Rose Jr. on the back of his helmet during Pittsburgh's game against the New York Giants on "Monday Night Football.'' Villanueva chose instead to write the name Alwyn Cashe, a veteran who died during the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2005.
As the NFL has allowed players to wear helmet decals honoring the victims of systemic racism, the Steelers decided as a team to honor Rose -- a Black teenager shot in the back by a white police officer in Pittsburgh in 2018 after he ran from a vehicle that was pulled over -- for the entirety of the season. The now-former East Pittsburgh officer was charged with murder, but a jury found him not guilty in March 2019.
Villanueva, a former Army Ranger who served three tours in Afghanistan, decided to break from the team and replace Rose's name with Cashe's, a Sgt. 1st Class who died after trying to rescue soldiers from a burning vehicle in Iraq. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that he approved of his player's decision.
As an organization, and myself as the head coach of the organization, we're going to support our players however they chose to participate and express themselves, or to not participate or not express themselves, as long as they do so thoughtfully and with class," said Tomlin Tuesday during a press conference. Tomlin added that Villanueva's choice didn't warrant an explanation.
This isn't the first time the veteran lineman publicly broke away from a team's supposedly unified decision for his own reasons. At the start of the 2017 season, he was the only Steelers player to leave the locker room and stand for the national anthem after Tomlin said the team would stay behind to avoid making a statement -- "Whatever we do, we're going to do 100 percent. We're going to do it together."
Villanueva apologized for his decision to stand alone, saying he felt "embarrassed" because it made "the organization look bad, my coach look bad, and my teammates look bad."
If two of us have gay sex, all of us must.
That reasoning is greatly flawed.
What is this NFL thing you speak off?
L
What are the odds in Vegas for how many seasons until the NFL goes bankrupt?
Seems more like a statement of fact than an apology.
Villa, you are a class act in a sport of classless a$$holes.
It will take a long time. It is soon going to be fully supported as a socialist sport in the up coming United Socialist States of America.
He is a cuck for saying he was embarrassed. Actually a pu$$y.
I’d be embarrassed too, as in some ways the most straightforward thing to do is to say “take this job and shove it” but if the pay is good and you enjoy playing football, this would be a very hard thing to do.
I sure am glad I got to enjoy football when it was all about The Game - the competition, the strategy, the talent, the edge of the seat 4th quarter battles, the crowds, the sheer fun of it all. Those days are gone.
Now the post-game headlines are what so-and-so had on his helmet, who stood, who sat, and so on. The addition of a second anthem is so beyond the pale. The game is dead, a smoking heap of radical politics and bullshit.
I’m hearing different numbers of drop-off from last year’s opener for different games, but it sounds like it’s averaging about a 20% drop; as Rush pointed out today, the decline goes back to about 2016, when Crappernick started taking the knee. Calculate the total drop-off from that point, and I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t come to damn near 30%. Not many businesses can survive that without massive reorganization. And not many players will be seeing anything like the kind of money they were making.
And I am very glad.
Very, very glad.
My wife put some game on this past weekend and I didn’t watch one single play. Couldn’t even tell you who was playing. Things that make you go, “Hmmmm”, is how easy it was to get to this point.
Pure propaganda from CBS.
The author left part of the story out...why the car Antwon was in was stopped.
Little Antwon and his buddy hired a jitney to do a drive by shooting.
After being shot the target fired back hitting the jitney which was then stopped by the East Pgh Police because it was just involved in an attempted murder of...a black man!
Little Smiling Antwon left his gat on the floor of the car, if I remember correctly, because he had fired all of his rounds at the target of the hit.
He had an empty mag in his pocket.
Cop was tried for murder and acquitted,
black juror said “Some of us wanted to convict him but we had to follow the law.”
The names of some of these folks.
Airborne Ranger to Pro Bowl Offensive Lineman, it boggles the mind! Can you imagine how much the ground hurt when he hit it after jumping out of a perfectly good airplane? I'm surprised he didn't have to LAPSE into combat!
Until the next round of TV deals with the league are negotiated there will be few consequences for this misbehavior. The people getting hurt are the vendors, parking attendants and merchandisers. That’s kind of the way it is — the ‘innocents’ always seem to get it in the neck.
Probably like before, Villanueva will come out and apologize!
To my post:

The bottom line will be strongly affected as well; the profit will be largely gone, necessitating massive structural change. Yes, it will take time for the impact to be felt directly by most players, but you could even see palpable change this season. Yes, innocents will be hurt. And they will know who did it to them.
