The Florida Surf Museum in Cocoa Beach put it this way Sunday on its Facebook page, where Jack Roland Murphy had published so many recollections from his fabled surfing days:

“Jack ‘Murf the Surf’ Murphy — surfing pioneer, jewel thief, convicted murderer, who spent the rest of his life ministering the word of Jesus in prisons across the world — has passed away. We will post more details when we get them ...”

Murphy was 83. He and his wife had been living in the Citrus County community of Crystal River.

Here’s a profile of Murphy and his work with prison ministry, written by staff writer Jeff Klinkenberg and published in September 2012 by what was then the St. Petersburg Times.

Welcome to Murf’s Law: Everything that could go wrong, did. Then came the jail breakthrough.

BUSHNELL — Jack Roland Murphy hates visiting prisons. “They’re literally hell on earth,” he always says. As Inmate No. 02467 he spent nearly two decades in Florida’s most notorious lockups. But he keeps going back to the places he hates most with a message he once sneered at.

Classy crook? Killed two women, cut them open and dumped them into the bay. Hope he rots where ever he goes.

The Apostle Paul supervised St. Stephens stoning and persecuted Christians. Should he rot as well? The foregiveness of the Lord is infinate for those who truly repent!

A murderer, thief and con artists who went on conning people right to the end.

The evidence does not suggest genuine repentance. He never admitted to many of the crimes he was known to have committed. He continued to lie about his past in books and interviews long after his so called conversion. The disposition of his soul is above my pay grade. But going only on the available evidence, I’d say he was an unrepentant criminal who was taking advantage of the credulous to the very end.

It was a good movie with Robert Conrad.

I’m just saying what he did and how he did it; so I guess Hitler should be accommodated the same thing thing you suggest?

PS: Supervising is one thing, doing the deed is another. You can say that Hitler or Stalin or Mao never killed anyone.

Did Hitler repent and ask the Lord forgiveness before he blew his brains out? No one knows. Since he was wacked out on drugs, the Russians were knocking at his door and was an Occultist, chances are he didn’t. You need to remember Sky;

“What is impossible with man is not impossible with God.”
Luke 18:27

If Hitler had genuinely repented, in a word, YES.

Forgiveness of that guy has nothing to do with me; his forgiveness has to come from God and the parents/relatives of those women he killed.

And yet Christ has commanded you to love your enemy and your neighbor as yourself.

This guy was not my enemy so why should I forgive someone who didn't do anything to me, my parents, relatives, or friends?

He has to ask forgiveness for what he did, not me.

I am sick and tired of pseudo-Christians who say you have to do this or that to be Christian; or if you don't do this or that you're not Christian.

If this guy wants forgiveness, ask it from those two women he murdered.

I have no reason to forgive this guy.

Fine. That’s between Hitler and God; I have nothing to do with it except I don’t forgive him for what he did to my people. I hope he’s rotting in H3LL.

I was from South Florida and had the pleasure of meeting him - he was “preaching” at a small gathering in a hotel. I still remember that sermon (not many that I do) - he had a real way of connecting with people.

He has Jesus as his defense attorney now - his problems are over!
