Pelosi, Mnuchin Cut a Deal on Pandemic Relief Funding Bill
PJ Media ^ | 09/04/2020 | Rick Moran

Posted on 09/04/2020 7:17:41 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The government will technically run out of money on September 30 and for members of Congress, this presented a nightmare scenario. Republicans would dearly love to pass some kind of pandemic relief bill before they break until after the election. But with negotiations still stalled, the prospect of being tied up with a coronavirus relief bill and having to deal with a bill to fund the government past September 30 at the same time would have been problematic.

To forestall that eventuality, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have agreed to treat the two issues separately. This means that any government funding bill will be “clean” — no pandemic relief measures included.

Politico:

“House Democrats are for a clean continuing resolution,” Drew Hammill, deputy chief of staff for Pelosi, said in a statement.

There is no consensus for how long the stopgap would extend government funding past Sept. 30, Hill aides said. House and Senate Democratic leaders haven’t formally discussed the issue yet, although a mid-December deadline would be the traditional practice during an election year.

As for pandemic relief, the “skinny” GOP bill introduced this week is getting fatter every day.

The new Senate Republican proposal — costing as much as $1 trillion — is expected to include $300 in weekly federal unemployment benefits through the end of December, another round of funding for the Paycheck Protection Program for small businesses, $105 billion for education, and liability protections for companies, schools and health care providers amid the pandemic, according to a draft proposal. The bill would also provide billions to the U.S. Postal Service by converting an existing loan into a grant.

If they don’t get something done, hundreds of thousands jobs will be lost in mid to late October. Many of these will be airline associated.

The Dems would love that...having unemployment jump before the election.

I doubt we will see “much” without direct payments to the states to make up “tax losses.” That will be the “code” for state bailouts.

They are all up for re-election.

We should propose an amendment that limits campaigning to two weeks before the primary and three weeks before the general for Congress.

The Presidential election needs four weeks—tops.

This constant campaigning is a scam to make millions of dollars.

Stimulus checks are a silly idea. Relief for the lower-income unemployed, though not to a level to keep them from going back to work, is what’s needed.

And to stop all this shutdown, masking, vaccine malarky.

Unemployment has been going down steadily for months.

As more states are forced to loosen their shutdown edicts due to CDC admissions of declining severity and deaths, more people will return to work &/or be hired.

Looking at the prior months and the progression, one could reasonably expect a moderate unemployment rate by October.

If you think travel and business will be back to normal in the next six weeks, you are not aware of what is going on.

In the airline business alone, if there is not an extension of the programs there will be tens of thousands of layoffs in the last two weeks of October. And that is just one industry.

Covid could disappear tomorrow...and this would still happen.

I don’t have a chart, but the trend is down over just 3 months. I think that will continue.

Straight line extrapolations are almost always in error, but the trend is amazing, considering what has been done to foil reopening.

I think the pre-election attacks on the economy (as a surrogate for POTUS)will moderate, especially since they have rebounded against not just the Ds in general, but House candidates in particular. They appear to be between the rock and the hard place, so I expect more openings and less fear.

There were new hirings in the current report. That should continue, as well. Hospitality usually winds down at the end of summer, many places. My area sees a surge for hunting season and that should go on as usual. Economies are always in flux. Perhaps the jobs that become available will moderate the losses in other sectors.

I don’t have a crystal ball, of course. But the Ds evidently think they need to be seen as helping the economy, so their obstruction should moderate, at the least.

I think you are missing my point.

The airlines have been kept afloat with the subsidies of the government. That is why they haven’t been massive layoffs and they fly half empty flights. That will end in October. The airlines will go bankrupt if they continue to operate without that subsidy.

You can project the trend line as far out as you desire. But there are significant potholes coming down the road. Not everyone is aware of them, but they are real. And they will be serious—the week of the election.

if Pelosi is being even semi-reasonable, it’s because theirinternal polling is showing that the Dems are totally F**ked, and blaming the Pubs ain’t working ...

I think I got your point.

Pelosi & Co are signaling they are willing to deal as of next week. They need something positive. The airlines will be unlikely candidates for sacrifice in pursuit of the goal to elect the faceless handlers of Biden.

The progs are pulling back from threatening to shoot the dog.

Now, they are simply telling us they will steal everything.

I don’t think they can pull that one off, either.

Honestly, if they toss the Airlines under the bus you will know the internal polls for the Dems are horrible. That’s kind of a domestic nuke.

If the Dems cave and save the airlines, they either think they will win...or Biden is a lost cause and they are saving themselves.

The “deal” is that the government will be kept running even while the Dems keep their knee on the throat of Americans needing virus relief.

“Politics ain’t beanbag”. Thousands and thousands of suffering Americans are no problem for the Dems- the media will always hide their role.

Biden is and they are, plus they are starting to fear losing the House.

How much did the airlines donate to the progs? Or Boeing?

Hospitality sector gained jobs for August. We could see 6.50% unemployment in October if the 2%/month trend holds.

Numbers aren’t that vital, IMO. People know their own personal economy.

Isn’t the August congressional recess over? Hopefully this all gets resolved well before the Sept 30 deadline. Nobody wins or benefits, politically or otherwise, from another government shutdown.

Technically the taxpayers win every time there's a shutdown. The ONLY people who should be getting backpay are the essential employees that work through it for free. Every guy who gets a free vacation shouldn't get paid for it at all.

And the bonus of people realizing just how useless so much of Government really is!

Hopefully Nancy negotiates in good faith.

Nancy will NEVER negotiate in good faith. It's wishful thinking to hope that she will. She is an utterly corrupt, thorough-going narcissist. She cares about only one thing: the further aggrandizement of her own POWER for her own self-satisfaction. There's nothing else. She'll even betray her own political party (as arguably she is doing) to get what she wants. Period. End of story.

Yes I agree just wouldn’t mind the stimulus because we could use that to help pay for my husband’s stroke decline in business and the fact that TX taxation on landowners is relentless and schools are completely unusable so we have to pay for our kids education....so don’t really feel bad wanting a rebate since the majority of elected officials funnel tax dollars for illegal alien pets.
