New York Citys public-school classrooms will not reopen until Sept. 21 to give teachers and principals more time to ready facilities amid the coronavirus under an 11th-hour deal struck between Mayor Bill de Blasio and the systems powerful unions.
Students will start the year online Sept. 16, then move to a hybrid approach including some in-person instruction five days later, de Blasio and schools Chancellor Richard Carranza announced Tuesday. The schools had been set to reopen Sept 10.
We need more time, Carranza said at a press conference that included the mayor and Michael Mulgrew, president of the citys largest teachers union.

TWe are the the only western country that’s keeping schools closed.
Sure sounds and looks like Cuomo and Dibasio are on a roll to destroy their city and state.
It’s the teachers union. They were threatening to go on strike. Deblasio caved.
The families that left know they did the right thing.
They have only had four months to prepare. With these folks it is never enough. Not enough time, not enough money. Ask them how much and they just say MORE!
Not smart or talented enough for one to successfully write one. Others have to say "I seen the police is wrong it's I saw the police" and "To many" is wrong, it's "Too many." Takes hours to write a simple paragraph that way.
Journalists today are like the joke:
Who has an IQ of 71?
The combined first two rows of a wrestling audience.
No..it’s the parents and voters who have created this .
More time....
In the 1800s it was illegal for a black person to learn to be literate.
Now, in the urban areas black or white people who become well educated could leave the Dem plantation and vote freely for conservatives.
Better to keep them dumb, De Blasio will tell you.
They have been on strike since March. They are pretty ignorant if they think the people who want their kids in school don't notice the lack of enthusiasm on the part of the teachers. I think going on strike is a lot like calling someone racist. If you do it too much, it loses its effectiveness as a weapon.
NYC schools are mainly minorities
There are 1 mil kids. They sent surveys to parent’s about remote vs in person.
Very high percentage of blacks wanted schools open with in person learning.
One teacher told my relative she has never worked so hard on her life. She believed her. Laughable.
They haven’t been on strike
More like paid vacation.
The positive test results are very low in NY NJ and the Dems want it lower. But what they choose to ignore is that lockdowns won’t make the virus disappear. It will be out there waiting to emerge as the outbreak at SUNY Oneonta has shown. My uneducated opinion is that Florida and Texas with their open policies have a better chance of eliminating the virus by allowing it to run its course than NY/NJ with their lock everyone up in their homes.
But what is their recourse if the officials and teachers don’t comply with parents wishes?
My kids have been back to school full time for a week now. (ND)
No recourse. They can choose to go all remote or part time in person. I don’t think in person every day is happening.
