Aurora police say a couple was shot and killed after responding to an online advertisement for a used car. Investigators say 18-year-old Kyree Brown admitted to stealing the 2017 Toyota RAV4 and posting it for sale on the Letgo app. When Joseph and Jossline Roland met him to buy the car, with thousands of dollars in cash, Brown allegedly pulled a gun — and shot them as they tried to get away.

According to the arrest affidavit, the Rolands left home at about 11 p.m. on Aug. 14 to meet the seller at Southlands Mall.

Brown said he met the couple at the mall and told them he accidentally brought the wrong vehicle title. He asked them to follow him to an apartment on East Cornell Circle near South Parker Road.

Brown said he pointed the gun at Joseph Roland, while the couple was still in their car, and demanded the money. He said Joseph Roland grabbed his arm and said the car started moving. Brown said the decided to shoot Joseph and accidentally shot Jossline.

Joseph and Jossline Roland died later at the hospital.

Brown allegedly told police he took $3,000 from the couple and tried to set the stolen RAV4 on fire near Havana Street and East Colfax Avenue.

Investigators identified Brown as the suspect by finding the listing that Joe Roland responded to on his cellphone and obtaining a Gmail email associated with the seller. They then obtained information associated with that email account, which included Brown’s name and a cellphone number. Investigators used the cellphone number to confirm that the phone was at Southlands mall, the crime scene and the location of the vehicle-burning, according to the affidavit.

Officers then tracked the phone’s location to find Brown in the 2300 block of North Elmira Street. That resulted in a short pursuit on Thursday, starting near Elmira Street and ending at East 29th Avenue and Central Park Boulevard in Denver, where Brown was taken into custody, the affidavit states.

"Hi, this be Kyree. Meet me at the mall at 11 tonight. I'll have the car and title. Bring cash."

These people obviously didn't deserve to die, but the warning signs were there.

Joseph and Jossline Roland died later at the hospital.

R.I.P. However, I can understand if its one person making an unwise decision. But both?

That's one benefit of being in a relationship. The other party will scream and tell you don't do this, its stupid. All this cash, handing it over in a deal at night? You better sit down

I can’t imagine any private seller accepting a check instead of cash. All of our vehicles are old and we’ve paid cash to the owner.

That said, he robbed them of $3000. I have to assume they thought they’d found the deal of a lifetime to get a 2017 for only $3000. Honest people don’t always think cynically.

We were looking for a used golf cart for my parents to use at their seasonal campground. My mom found one on Craigslist that was only $1999-it was a pic of one that was obviously worth at least $10,000. Far too good to be true. She was thoroughly annoyed at my naysaying. I kept warning her that it was not legit. She was so excited that she dismissed every red flag I pointed out about the posting. After a few back and forths with the seller she had to concede that it wasn’t a legitimate post. Her joy at finding such an amazing deal blinded her to the obvious and I was worried about what might happen to her if she took off to a neighboring state with $2000 cash in hand.

“Brown allegedly told police he took $3,000 from the couple...”

If the $3k figure is true, then the killer baited the hook with an extremely low price. The secret to most crime: greed overrides judgment.

After the shooting, police say Brown posted the car for sale on the app again, using the same photo and email address — under the user name Jessica Harlan. At that point, police say the car was already at their impound lot.

Honest people don’t always think cynically.

Perhaps he was not honest. His daughter told cops he flipped cars for a living. He was not a babe in the woods. Maybe dealing in stolen cars was part of his business plan.
