The estate of Leonard Cohen said on Friday it was considering legal action over the use of the Canadian singer’s 'Hallelujah' at the Republican National Convention, calling it a brazen attempt to politicize the song.

A recording of 'Hallelujah' by Tori Kelly was first played during a fireworks display on Thursday night that followed President Donald Trump’s acceptance speech for the Republican nomination.

A second, more operatic version, was performed on camera by American tenor Christopher Macchio, before singing Ave Maria.

He’d have given it away if Joe asked to use it.

Statutory damages up to $150k. Chump change given the amount the campaign has. Cut them a check and tell them they can eat it

I doubt the estate actually owns the rights, it’s much more likely the publishing company owns them and they’re with ASCAP so the song can be used as long as the estate gets royalties.

Addendum - they didn’t use the actual Cohen recording, someone else sang it so again, I really don’t think they have an argument unless they don’t get the royalty.

You’re right. It’s one of those things with the catch phrase, ‘I don’t think it means what you think it means’.

This is so disgusting and absurd .
Cohen , born into Orthadox Jewry and a lifelong practicing and observant Jew ( & Buddhist), would have loved his Oresudent Trump has done more to stand with Jews and support the Jewish State than any other President in U.S.history. Although Canadian , if Cohen and Trump could have sat down together they would have become fast friends , on Trump’s support if Judeism alone .
I cannot understand the depth of moral depravity and political mental retardation that infects the minds of American Liberal Jews these days . I suggest they step not Jews at all ( JINOs - Jews in name only) but rather , sickening and perfidious members of the Synagogue of Satan....they will pay a terrible cost on Judgement Day

It seems to me that this got settled when that bakery was forced to sell custom cakes to events they didn’t support. If you are selling a product, in this case a song, in a public marketplace, you cannot pick the people who can and who cannot buy it.

I think it was performed in an abbreviated version and not all of the lyrics were used.

I deeply dislike that song. Maybe Mr. Cohen’s estate will succeed it making disappear from public use.

I never liked it either. Always reminded me of Lennon’s Imagine. Very pretty melody with vapid lyrics.

I don’t know why people don’t actually listen to the lyrics. It’s about sex.

I think that song is annoying. On another thread someone posted that it’s very Christian, but I don’t see it.
