I don’t think the lyrics are vapid at all.
John Cale’s version on “I’m Your Fan” (a Leonard Cohen tribute album) deserves credit for popularizing the song. Cohen’s own version, done a couple of years earlier, comes off quite differently.
And, yes, it’s about a relationship.
Laughable about how artists - and now the “estate” of dead artists - somehow imagine they’re the ultimate authority on how songs can be heard. That’s all up to the people who own the publishing, and if the proper license has been obtained the opinion of the artist / estate means absolutely squat.
Excellent comparison.
In the verses I have seen, each Bible reference is wrong.
“In the verses I have seen, each Bible reference is wrong.”
Wrong, and an overall a vapid song.
When a person tries to equate the worship of his own phallus to the worship of God, “vapid” is, perhaps, the least bad possibility.
I just read the lyrics. Blasphemous. Considering what hallelujah means. Of course he predicted people would call it this, so much so he wrote it into the lyrics. In reading the Wikipedia entry, this song is called the standard of hymns for secularism. If so, why cant they get their own material? David is from the Bible. Surely secularism doesnt need Gods Word to write a song.
It's a several day ear worm for me.
Another song which, for me, is multiple day ear worm is
Home Free doing Ring of Fire.
Used to like a few of his tunes decades back. But now I just find them depressing, so no thanks anyway.
I wish people would listen to the damn lyrics of this song. It’s not religious, t’s not uplifting, it’s not inspirational. It’s about a destructive relationship.
QUOTE:
“love is a cold and broken hallelujah”
That’s hallelujah upside down!! And they play this thing in Shrek? And now the RNC? Can’t anyone understand words anymore???
Maybe they should sue Tori Kelly...
Here is a link to an Easter version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbX4ZlmFVPw
Live performances are going to suffer in the future and it will take a long time to rebound.Music colleges will close etc. Hollywood is crumbling too. But music will be missed.
Lol
It’s often used in Latin American weddings. New lyrics that aren’t creepy have been written in Portuguese/Spanish.
I would still prefer to avoid it.

Re “Hallelujah” ... on the RNC Convention thread Thursday, I posted that I thought “Ave Maria” should have been balanced by adding another religious piece that wasn’t Mary centric for evangelicals (who got Trump elected in the first place). I was strongly attacked, BTW. I suggested “How Great Thou Art”. Also good would’ve been “Amazing Grace”.
Someone replied that the song, “Hallelujah” was sung and that accomplished the balance. Although I’d heard the song before I never had paid attention to the lyrics, so I Googled them. They were terrible — as you implied. I’m thinking, “Oh, no; that’s really bad.” Definitely not something for evangelicals and born-again Christians.
Then another post said some woman had written truly Christian lyrics to the music and those lyrics were used at the program. I never could find anything like that online. So I was confused. At this point in time I still don’t know what lyrics were sung, and don’t care much. Either would fall short if compared to “How Great Thou Art”.
( I cannot understand the depth of moral depravity and political mental retardation that infects the minds of American Liberal Jews these days . )
Have you read the OT accounts in Kings and Chronicles of Judah and Israel? There were many depraved Jews then even when they were given charge of the oracles of God.
In the NT in the first chapter of the Gospel of John it says, He (Jesus) came to his own, but they received him not. But as many received him to these gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name. (John 1:11,12)
Men are sinful creatures. Those feigning works of righteousness should be suspect. But modern Jews are generally very liberal and are diametrically opposed to OT teachings, or pay lip service. Romans 1,2 shows that gentiles and Jews have nothing to boast about before God. The only thing that pleases God is the righteousness of faith, and faith in His Son.
