Hurricane Laura emerged from the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind flooding and fatalities in Hispaniola and Cuba. Former Hurricane Marco dissipated Tuesday morning, a few hours before Laura strengthened to a hurricane.

Phone rings. A call from the hotel’s front desk. A cool & official-sounding woman: “Due to the severity of the storm, we’re asking you to ride it out in your bathtub, or with the rest of us in the stairwells.” Serious shit. #Hurricane #LAURA #Texas #Louisiana
worst case... strengthening storm, at night, at high tide..
God be with them.

Incredible wind velocities of 180 - 205 mph just above the ground were observed by a dropsonde in the northeastern eyewall of #Laura, helping to confirm the winds the plane observed. The surface winds would be lower due to friction, but still extreme.
Hiya cll! Hope you rode through Baby Laura without too much difficulty. I saw lights across PR via satellite the night following the storm. Took that as a good sign.
Laura’s starting off disaster month a few days early. The crescendo of disaster prophecies I’ve never quite witnessed before (not going to list them; inappropriate here).

Thanks as always for your conscientious efforts to keep us all informed. And all the other good reporters here
Any predictions re: Galveston? I have the Casa del Mar beach webcam going. need to check a map and see where that is. I lived in Houston a few decades ago. went occasionally to Galveston but preferred a sleeping little fishing village called Matagorda. I believe it is a state park now.
As the Port Arhur mayor said, they are in God's hands now.
Hopefully, those who sheltered at home in Lake Charles trimmed trees away from their houses, have a safe room, and a hatchet if they need to access the roof. It will be a long night.
I got lightning and thunder and rain.
Heavy.
Henderson County/ Cedar Creek Lake.
Big Ass Storm.
Hey. Yes, we lost power just for a moment in San Juan. Otherwise, not eventful on this side of the island.
One thing though, we had been in a severe drought for most of the summer, with water rationing and everything, and now our reservoirs are spilling over. Guess I prayed for rain a bit too much!
