“Little Rock AK published a local threats “

I think Little Rock, Alaska is overreacting.

(heh, That’s why I wrote out Arkansas I wasn’t sure of the abbreviation)

I know they are fairly certain of the track, to Port Arthur. But really, everyone down to Corpus Christi had better keep an eye on this storm. When they get this big, they don’t always turn.

If it does stay on track, the city of Sulphur could be under water. This will be worse than Rita.

I read somewhere that gas prices would probably not rise much because of low usage during the ongoing pandemic times...guess we’ll find out

Yea. Small cities of Hackberry and Cameron we’re wiped out by Rita. They bounced back, but they’re about to disappear again.

Rita’s surge came up to about 3 miles south of I-10. This could be worse.

Ha Ha. I copied straight from the NWS website. Should have paid better attention. Oddly enough, I've done pretty well for managing this busy thread. You caught my error. I am not perfect. Mea culpa. I will try to do better going forward.

There is a HUGE difference in the damage done by 110-115 mph winds and 140-145 mph. A LOT more damage occurs to residential homes. Almost every roof will go.

I’ve ridden out a few of these, up to 120 mph. I wouldn’t want to be around when anything stronger hit.

Hurricane Laura will be a sobering experience. Sulphur is too close for comfort to landfall.

I just tuned into the The Hype...I mean, the Weather Channel. They’re saying the NHC is predicting Laura will be a possible Cat 4 by landfall.

They are also saying that (again, according to the NHC) parts of LA will experience “unsurviveable storm surge”. Prediction are that some places could get 15-20 feet of storm surge.

Anyone else hearing that?

Oh, Dear Lord. I am nauseous looking at that monster. Praying for the souls in its path. And it's only August. What else does 2020 have to offer, in the form of hurricanes (and anything else)??? 🙏

No problemo. You bear no fault for anything and get a pass even if you did.

I realize hurricanes don’t go in a straight path.

Laura still seems to be traveling in a NW direction which if it stayed true, would make landfall below Galveston.

What are the factors that make the experts believe that it will still hit near Pt Arthur?

Yes. There’s quite a bit in the Lake Charles area.

***

Don’t dismiss the SETexas area, Beaumont/Orange/Port Arthur.
They have a large PetroChem complex also. They all will be
impacted to some degree.

Yes, the National Hurricane Center stated those exact words in their Public Advisory and Discussion. Look at the top of the thread. Links are there. If you prefer graphics, there is one at the top of the thread which illustrates storm surge 15-20 feet, traveling up to 30 miles inland, in LA.

From the Hurricane Laura Discussion Number 27 (Discussion link provided at the top of the thread)
Laura is moving northwestward at about 13 kt. A gradual turn toward
the north-northwest and north are expected within the next 12-18
hours as the hurricane moves around the western portion of a mid-
level ridge that extends from the western Atlantic into the
southeastern United States. This motion will bring the center of
Laura onshore in southwestern Louisiana or extreme eastern Texas
tonight. By Thursday night, Laura is forecast to turn northeastward,
and then east-northeastward on Friday as it becomes embedded in the
mid-latitude westerlies. The dynamical track models are in good
agreement, and little adjustment to the previous NHC forecast track
was required.

What part of Texas do you live?

This Summer in the Hill Country has not been close to mild.
It’s been hotter than hell.

I’m really worried for them. They could have 6 plus feet of surge there. I know several people who have not evacuated. I’ve been trying to convince them today to get out.

This is no joke. They’ve never seen surge potential like this. Heading west looks like a good plan to me
