NYPD officer on police work: "The job is dead ... You would be crazy to take this job at this day and age"

An anonymous NYPD officer recently said morale throughout the department has hit an all-time low amid widespread opposition to and hostility toward police.

"The term for NYPD that is going around in every command in the city is, 'The job is dead.' You would be crazy to take this job now in this day and age. ... It's sad that that's where we are at right now. People who are saying that we're afraid, we're not afraid. We just want to be supported."

He said these problems are not just in New York City, but "across the United States."

"When I became a police officer many years ago, I never thought that I would have to put this uniform on and be looked at as the enemy and to be hated. And it's not fair because we sacrifice ourselves every day. No matter what your skin color is, it's sad. In my tenure here at NYPD, I can never ever imagine that it would be this bad, as far as not being supported."

Citing several statistics, he said crime in New York City has skyrocketed under the governance of Mayor Bill de Blasio, the city council, and the district attorney's office.

"Why would you even want to put the uniform on to take the job if we're putting them in jail for the crimes that they commit and the D.A.'s just going to release them? What's the point of doing the job? It defeats the purpose. It's just a revolving door," he said.

The officer said he used to be a Democrat, and, although he would not consider himself one to follow politics, he considers himself a Republican. He said he thinks President Trump "absolutely" supports the police,

When asked if he thinks Joe Biden and Kamala Harris support the police, he said: "Absolutely not. They would not support us. People who allow these protesters to talk about how they want to defund the police department, we're there to make sure that nothing happens to them, but they're the ones saying that they want us dead."

Sad. I know guys that are 5th and 6th generation NYPD. It’s in their blood and goes back to the Ellis Island days. And these guys are/were proud to wear the badge.

An Army buddy of mine, and I decided to join a local police force here in California. It was almost the day of the test, and I told my friend no way was I going to do it. I decided I would rather have a sane occupation than be fodder for politicians, and the insanity that was going on at the time. That was 1968.

I’m glad I made the choice, however that was mine. I greatly admire those that made it through those times. Now 52 years later we are going through the same game all over again, and at the hands of the exact same perpetrators.

My friend from the Army went on, and became a great cop. Did his job well, and retired a Captain. I remember him counting the days to retirement from the beginning of his career.

I understand your story. My feelings somewhat parallel it. I was a soldier in Vietnam fighting the commies. The war was militarily won, but the dems gave it away anyway through defunding.

There are many many people who still back The Blue. But when your city government works against you, and the prosecutor’s office sets up a revolving door, I think it must be the most thankless job in the world.
