(CNN)Black newborn babies in the United States are more likely to survive childbirth if they are cared for by Black doctors, but three times more likely to die when looked after by White doctors, a study has found. The mortality rate of Black newborns shrunk by between 39% and 58% when Black physicians took charge of the birth, according to the research, which laid bare how shocking racial disparities in human health can affect even the first hours of a person's life.
By contrast, the mortality rate for White babies was largely unaffected by the doctor's race. The findings support previous research, which has shown that, while infant mortality rates have fallen in recent decades, Black children remain significantly more likely to die early than their White counterparts.
Researchers from George Mason University analyzed data capturing 1.8 million hospital births in Florida between 1992 and 2015 for the new study, which was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, also known as PNAS. When cared for by White physicians, Black newborns were about three times more likely to die in the hospital than White newborns, the researchers found.

The average infant mortality rate ("Patient Expired") of 0.3% is the same for white patients regardless if the doctor is black or white. If the patient and doctor are both black, the infant mortality rate is slightly/10bp higher, i.e. 0.4%, but the fatality rate is a much larger 0.9% when the patient is black and the doctor is white. That last/highest mortality group also has a higher-than-average incidence of Medicare patients and longer stay in the hospital. Interestingly, the black doctor and black patient group has more female doctors, lower length of stay, and more self-pay patients than the higher mortality black patient/white doctor group.
It is worth noting the r-squared values a very low but that may be due to their using a linear model vs a logit model.
Frankly, there are a lot of people jumping to a lot of conclusions. Frankly I need to spend more time with the data before rendering a verdict.

In the hospital I work at in southern NJ I’d say about 98% of the doctor’s are all East Indian and Pakistani.

If they’re in a county hospital, the attending may be listed as Department Head Dr. Honkey, but the resident actually administering the care is probably from India or Pakistan. And furthermore, the actual figures are bogus, because they don’t state the number of infant mortalities total, and break it down to the number dying in neonatal wards as opposed to during the first month after birth, or compare them to white babies.
If there are three infant mortalities in Chicago in February under the care of a white doctor, but only two under the care of a black doctor, that’s not a statistic, it’s just a tragedy, to turn Stalin on his head.

What % of Florida neonatologists (specialists who care for newborns) are Black, and are they more likely to practice in large medical centers or community hospitals? I would not be shocked if mortality of premature babies was higher in smaller community hospitals than in large medical centers.
I do know that despite the medical education establishment bending over backwards for the last 50-60 years, Blacks are still underrepresented in US medical school enrollment.
(I believe that this mostly represents the continuing dysfunction and failure of unionized urban pubic school systems.)
From what I could find, 70% of neonatologists are Caucasian, which suggests that Whites are also underrepresented (according to the US Census Bureau, 76.3% of the US population is White alone.) Whites represent 49.8% of the 2019-2020 US medical school enrollment and Blacks are 7.3% according to the AMA. Not surprisingly (to me, at least), Asians are 22.4% of US medical students and 5.9% of the US population.
More on the abuse of statistics together with repealing the maxim that correlation is not causation.
My guess is that the correlation that the researchers desired and found is likely outweighed by the variables of the quality of the institution and quality of the doctors, and then compounded by the fact that there are likely more white doctors than black doctors to begin with.

Understanding the causes of differences in outcomes for patients is important, and this kind of research if done correctly is useful. In this case it seems to me that some of the underlying assumptions may not be correct.
The distribution of infant mortality rates across the state of Florida is not uniform. High infant mortality rates are clustered in certain areas. Those areas tend to be rural, and often have a lot of poverty. Controlling for the effects of the unequal distribution of the high risk pregnancies that lead to infant deaths in the presence of an unequal geographic distribution of quality hospitals seems to require some kind of geographic modeling, not just a statewide model.
Here is a link to the Florida department of health infant death statistics by county. On that page you can select graphs using the "change grouping" control to see deaths by race over time on a per county basis.
Looking at the county level data it is clear that mortality rates for both black and white infants often vary quite a bit from the state average in the same direction. This suggests that the quality of health care, or the underlying health issues for the population are not simply race based.
