Ex-F.B.I. Lawyer Expected to Plead Guilty in Review of Russia Inquiry

WASHINGTON — A former F.B.I. lawyer intends to plead guilty after he was charged with falsifying a document as part of a deal with prosecutors conducting their own criminal inquiry of the Russia investigation, according his lawyer and court documents made public on Friday.

The lawyer, Kevin Clinesmith, 38, who was assigned to the Russia investigation, plans to admit that he altered an email from the C.I.A. that investigators relied on to seek renewed court permission in 2017 for a secret wiretap on the former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, who had at times provided information to the spy agency. Mr. Clinesmith’s lawyer said he made a mistake while trying to clarify facts for a colleague.

Mr. Clinesmith had written texts expressing opposition to President Trump, who is sure to tout the plea agreement as evidence that the Russia investigation was illegitimate and politically motivated. Mr. Trump has long been blunt about seeing the continuing investigation by the prosecutor examining the earlier inquiry, John H. Durham, as political payback whose fruits he would like to see revealed in the weeks before the election.

Attorney General William P. Barr has portrayed Mr. Durham’s work as rectifying what he sees as injustices by officials who sought in 2016 to understand links between the Trump campaign and Russia’s covert operation to interfere in the election.

He’s not a small fish. Mueller team, Presidential briefings, Fisa court docs. He’s the only one with a smoking gun document I suspect. And that’s why he became the sacrificial lamb. The GOP needs a bit of campaign season red meat to GOTV and reelect Graham and McConnell. That’s what this is all about.

Mr Goldman missed the transcripts where Comey, Brennan, Clapper testified that they had no evidence.

“Go back to sleep, Louie.”

Yup, after nearly 4 years of any day now tick-tocks it’s pretty much “wake me if you ever get around to arresting somebody that average people have heard of” (I mean without having to do internet searches to find out who the low level schmuck is - most people just don’t care that much).

After @realDonaldTrump won, FBI lawyer Clinesmith texted “the crazies won finally”, was “numb” and “so stressed about what [he] could have done differently”
2 weeks later, “in the context of a question about whether he intended to stay in government, he wrote “viva la resistance” pic.twitter.com/7cPkmD4iGH— Svetlana (@RealSLokhova) August 14, 2020

Important excerpt from the Kevin Clinesmith Criminal Information:

On 8/17/16, the CIA informed the Crossfire Hurricane team that Carter Page had been a CIA source.

They hid this fact from the FISA Court.

“I hope he’s doing a great job, and I hope they’re not going to be politically correct,” Trump said. “Obama knew everything. Vice President Biden, as dumb as he may be, knew everything, and everybody else knew.”

Not with you totally!

“political payback” should be prosecuting criminals, jmho!

I’m hoping pasty-white soi-boy has a meaningful stay in FPMITAP.

That’ll change his mind.

"I merely said it was painfully slow to wait for justice to be done while lightning fast moving Dems set up an entire impeachment of an innocent man based on a phone call to Ukraine, within a few weeks."

And they got ZILCH for their hasty efforts.

Now we all know why Barr said he wouldn't proceed until he had evidence to convict -- "beyond a reasonable doubt"...

It appears there are lots of immature, impatient FReepers (or trolls) who want show trials -- even if we lose them all.

Not me. I'll wait for "sure kills"...

In that sentence the author is trying to claim that the prosecution of Clinesmith is merely part of Trump’s political payback.

The proof that he’s full of sh*t is right there in his own article:

It’s the fact that he had to bury what Clinesmith did in the 21st paragraph of his article.

If Clinesmith’s actual act was so patently not deserving of prosecution except by a malicious political, the author would have put it in the first paragraph.

That’s the twisting pretzel right there.

I’m going to buy more popcorn so I can enjoy each and every contortion that the NYT has to go through as each new guilty plea is revealed.

"Remember when someone posted about “classification should only be done to protect national security interests and not cover up embarrassing or illegal acts” (or, words to that effect)?"

That was an EO signed by none other than 0b0z0, himself.

The statement imo is not truthful.

Agree he is trying to “claim” that the prosecution of Clinesmith is merely part of Trump’s political payback.
Twisting the truth to suit his viewpoint. Propagand, just like their master, satan, partially true!

But that statement is baloney!

Glad to finally see something come of the investigation!!

Take care........pilgrim

“Mr. Clinesmith’s lawyer said he made a mistake while trying to clarify facts for a colleague.”

The indictment he agreed to clearly states he knew he was altering the meaning. His lawyer is going to the public with a lie.

It’s not just untruthful, it’s exactly the opposite of the truth (the Mueller fiasco was the political prosecution — attempt, this is just the revelation of that) and his own article shows that he knows it.

I don’t think we disagree. I’m just enjoying the ridiculousness of the New York Times a lot more.
