New York City has seen a surge in shootings and other violent crime amid the new coronavirus pandemic, but the factors driving the trend are up for debate.
Shooting victims were up 81%, and shooting incidents were up 76% from Jan. 1 through Aug. 2, compared with the same period in 2019, according to New York Police Department figures.
The city recorded 237 homicides between Jan. 1 and Aug. 2, a 31% increase from the 181 during the same period in 2019.
The year-over-year increase in those crimes is more pronounced than any in more than two decades, according to the police, and the problem seems to be intensifying. Shooting incidents were up 201% in the four-week period ended Aug. 2, compared with the same period in 2019, while the number of shooting victims rose 165%, and the number of homicides climbed by 50%.
The NYPD, Mayor Bill de Blasio, judges, local politicians, and criminologists all have varying theories on what is propelling the rise.
In a press conference on Aug. 4., Mr. de Blasio said the rise in violence was fueled by a “perfect storm” of factors, though he singled out a backlog in the state court system, which he said hindered prosecutions.
The state’s Office of Court Administration has pushed back against the mayor’s assertion. A spokesman for the office, Lucian Chalfan, said July 27 that Mr. de Blasio “clearly has absolutely no understanding of how the criminal justice process works.”
New York state Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence Marks said July 31 that state courts were returning to normal after the pandemic temporarily closed some courts, with more than 22,000 arraignments conducted since mid-April and grand juries returning in August.

It is quite simple! DeBlasio refuses to let the police enforce the law. DeBlasio's New York prosecutors refuse to prosecute much crime that are certain convictions. This is done based on politics and desired for re-election. DeBlasios court system under his desire releases violent criminals without bail.
He has undone all that Rudy had accomplished. Rudy is a bit old now and most regrettably is I suspect not willing to politic on the national stage. Rudy does love New York with all his heart. If he should so desire I would much wish he run for Mayor of New York again and clean up the democrat mess there again.
It should be noted that when Rudy became Mayor it was one of the most violent cities in the USA. When he left as mayor it was the safest major city in the USA.
The Democrats are adhering to their Marxist beliefs. When they control a jurisdiction, they simply see crime in a “revolutionary” context and view lawbreakers as agents of social change and not felons. They, when controlling such jurisdictions,they not only do not arrest, but they do not prosecute and even release as many convicted criminals as possible. This actually happening wherever the marxist Democrats have control. Make no mistake. It will be deployed nationwide if they obtain power nationally. Much is at stake in this coming election and sadly it is not clear if a majority of Americans realize just what is happening.
