Contrary to his predictions, President Trump won't have a coronavirus vaccine ready by Election Day, vaccine experts tell CNN after reviewing data from Moderna, the first company to begin its Phase 3 clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine in the United States.
"There's no way. There's just no way," said Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccinologist at Baylor College of Medicine and a CNN medical analyst.
Last week President Trump said he was "optimistic" a vaccine would be ready around Election Day on November 3.
"I believe we'll have the vaccine before the end of the year, certainly, but around that date, yes. I think so," Trump said Thursday.
CNN obtained part of an email Moderna sent on Friday to the principal investigators of its vaccine trials. It says 4,536 study subjects have enrolled in the trials.
The trial started the morning of July 27 and intends to enroll 30,000 study subjects. The company has said it's "on track to complete enrollment in September."
Moderna won't make that 30,000 in September if they continue at the rate of the first two weeks, but it's likely the speed of enrollment will ramp up, since as of Friday only 54 of the study's 89 sites were operating, according to the company's email to its researchers.
Moderna's numbers did increase significantly from the first week of the trial to the second week.
Even if Moderna does reach its goal of full enrollment during the month of September, the company still won't have a vaccine on the market by Election Day, infectious disease experts say.
"I don't see how that would be possible," said Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccinologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
After Moderna enrolls its subjects and gives them their first shot, they then have to wait 28 days

Pharmaceutical companies don’t have to be paid to make sure Trump gets egg on his face. Who actually believes that they are acting in good faith?
I am surprised that President Trump would make a declaration that a vaccine could be available in time for the election when that depends on a pharmaceutical company. It doesn’t sound like a good strategy on his part.

Yes! That was one of the innovations President Trump brought to the table. The vaccine makers have never taken that kind of risk before, so President Trump stepped in and negotiated to purchase the vaccines in advance so they’d be manufactured in parallel. But he didn’t just do it for everyone; they picked the top 5 best candidates out of the over 200 vaccine candidates worldwide.
If it’s approved, it becomes available immediately. If something goes terribly wrong, they toss the doses. Never been done before, but it saves months!
The pharmaceutical companies have every incentive to be the first with an approved product. The first one gets to sell as many doses as they can make. The last one out the door has no customers left because the disease is gone. This is for BILLIONS if not tens of billions of dollars. There are 7 billion doses needed worldwide. The first couple companies with a safe and effective product will make a FORTUNE. It’s a race to be on the podium.

Or we may never have one. Life goes on. We hit the five million mark in terms of cases. So that means right now there are more than five million people out there who tested positive for covid who recovered, have no symptoms and haven’t died. I call that positive news.

If thats the case, make HCQ and Azithromycin OTC drugs so anyone with a cough and/or fever can go to the local drug store within first 48 hours of symptoms and self medicate additionally with Zinc Sulfate in the interim, Pandemic over. If a patient waits a few days to see a physician for tests and a week for results, if over 70 years of age, you’re dead.
Normal prescription: Pacquenil 400 mg X 2/day-5 days./Zinc Sulfate- 220 mg X 1/day 5 days, Azithromycin 200 mg 1/day 5 days. This works.

I think he as information on the Oxford study. He most certainly would know of Moderna’s numbers. The press doesn’t think Trump gets information that is pertinent to national security apparently. Given that he is yet to be wrong, I am not inclined to think he will start now being incorrect.

I think if the medical community gets behind the data and Rx the meds that it would be fine. These meds and abs should NOT be OTC. However, They should be widely available under the prescriptive authority of a physician, who, you know has the expertise to treat and prescribe medications — unlike just about everyone on this website who thinks they should practice medicine.

It’s been replaced with a combination of “orange man bad!” and “they’re gonna mind control us with 5G tower microchips!” conspiracy theories.
Some would sooner watch half a million American citizens die terrible deaths than admit that President Trump and the medical community are working hard to save lives. And yet, just as the most virulent BLM supporter will dial 911 when somebody’s breaking into their home at 2am, the anti-medical community conspiracy theorists will gladly show up at the ER when they can’t breathe and need help.
