Moderna's clinical trial numbers show there's 'no way' Trump can have a vaccine by Election Day

Contrary to his predictions, President Trump won't have a coronavirus vaccine ready by Election Day, vaccine experts tell CNN after reviewing data from Moderna, the first company to begin its Phase 3 clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine in the United States.

"There's no way. There's just no way," said Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccinologist at Baylor College of Medicine and a CNN medical analyst.

Last week President Trump said he was "optimistic" a vaccine would be ready around Election Day on November 3.

"I believe we'll have the vaccine before the end of the year, certainly, but around that date, yes. I think so," Trump said Thursday.

CNN obtained part of an email Moderna sent on Friday to the principal investigators of its vaccine trials. It says 4,536 study subjects have enrolled in the trials.

The trial started the morning of July 27 and intends to enroll 30,000 study subjects. The company has said it's "on track to complete enrollment in September."

Moderna won't make that 30,000 in September if they continue at the rate of the first two weeks, but it's likely the speed of enrollment will ramp up, since as of Friday only 54 of the study's 89 sites were operating, according to the company's email to its researchers.

Moderna's numbers did increase significantly from the first week of the trial to the second week.

Even if Moderna does reach its goal of full enrollment during the month of September, the company still won't have a vaccine on the market by Election Day, infectious disease experts say.

"I don't see how that would be possible," said Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccinologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

After Moderna enrolls its subjects and gives them their first shot, they then have to wait 28 days

The only way we’re getting a vaccine in a year or less is if we engage the brains of the space aliens we’re holding at Area 51.

Maybe we could work out a deal.

Trump doesn’t have a vaccine. What the stupid author of the article meant is that no vaccine will be available by election day. Trump is not a pharmaceutical company.
I would not be surprised at all if the democrat party paid big pharma to delay the production until after the election. I doubt it, but would not be surprised.

And if he did you’d be crazy to take it.
This stuff is being rushed through development far too rapidly.

Trump is being very optimistic. He is not guaranteeing anything. The dumb press hangs on his every word in playing “gotcha” and the people are tired of their petulance.

Political hit piece by CNN against President Trump. First, Moderna isn’t the only vaccine candidate in phase 3 trials. Second, this whole article is bases solely on the number of participants currently enrolled in the trial. That’s an absurd measure. It has no bearing on the safety or efficacy of their vaccine candidate. And last I hear, they had over 130,000 people signed up at the Federal vaccine candidate volunteer website, so there should be no shortage of volunteers for phase 3.

Typical garbage reporting from CNN. If it were Biden’s vaccine program, they’d be all for it. But it’s President Trump’s, so it must be bad because orange man bad!

Nobody will trust a vaccine rushed through in months. They barely trust stuff that’s taken years to develop.

Moderna may or may not have the vaccine trialed by election but is sure sounds like Biden media arm CNN is in a whistling in the graveyard mode hoping they do not.

Rules for Radicals:

RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity’s very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.)

Wasn’t there a mention if the news they are already ramping up to produce the vaccine even before it has gone through those clinical trials? If the vaccine is proven effective, they can start shipping it out the day after it is approved.

I think Trump knows this virus is going to burn itself out before a vaccine can be ready. But there is no way he can tell the Karens that. So he plays along with the Great Vaccine Hope.

CNN doesn’t know anything the Dims haven’t told them. Moderna has already given vaccines to the first small trial group. They are now starting on a group of 30,000. So, yes CNN, there is already a Moderna vaccine and it isn’t anywhere near Election Day. In the next 30 days, more than 30,000 people will have received it. I don’t know when Fauci will allow it to be released globally.

Typical biases reporting...”Trump can have.”

How about “The nation can have” or “We can have” or “Will be developed by...”?

I’m not sure trump wants a vaccine anyway because it opens a whole new mess of problems, debates, hand-wringing about it being mandatory, or not. Believe you me, the Dems would want it mandatory and many people do not...especially one that has been “warp speed”...what could possibly go wrong? Trump, IMHO, is dangling the shiny object of a vaccine out there to keep the country down the path of opening and getting back to a semblance of normal. Once school opens and it’s clear that thousand of school children and teachers won’t die and other businesses can operate, people will finally grasp this is JUST a virus and there are those that need to be careful but the rest need to live their lives.

"and a CNN medical analyst."

On the CNN payroll? No possible bias, here!

Exploratory analysis of immunization records highlights decreased SARS-CoV-2 rates in individuals with recent non-COVID-19 vaccinations

Multiple clinical studies are ongoing to assess whether existing vaccines may afford protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection through trained immunity. In this exploratory study, we analyze immunization records from 137,037 individuals who received SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests. We find that polio, Hemophilus influenzae type-B (HIB), measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), varicella, pneumococcal conjugate (PCV13), geriatric flu, and hepatitis A / hepatitis B (HepA-HepB) vaccines administered in the past 1, 2, and 5 years are associated with decreased SARS-CoV-2 infection rates, even after adjusting for geographic SARS-CoV-2 incidence and testing rates, demographics, comorbidities, and number of other vaccinations. Furthermore, age, race/ethnicity, and blood group stratified analyses reveal significantly lower SARS-CoV-2 rate among black individuals who have taken the PCV13 vaccine, with relative risk of 0.45 at the 5 year time horizon (n: 653, 95% CI: (0.32, 0.64), p-value: 6.9e-05). These findings suggest that additional pre-clinical and clinical studies are warranted to assess the protective effects of existing non-COVID-19 vaccines and explore underlying immunologic mechanisms.

(This study comes from the Mayo Clinic, BTW).

It looks like a vaccine doesn't need to be specific for COVID-19 for it to have some efficacy against COVID-19. And no vaccine is 100% effective.
