Charbel Haj, who works at the port, said it started as small explosions like firecrackers, then the huge blast erupted and he was thrown off his feet. His clothes were torn off.
Video taken by residents showed a fire raging at the port, sending up a giant column of smoke, illuminated by flashes of what appear to be fireworks. Local TV stations reported that a fireworks warehouse was involved.
The fire then appeared to catch at a nearby building, triggering a more massive explosion, sending up a mushroom cloud and a shock wave over the city.

Very good illustration of the effects of a dramatic increase in atmospheric pressure (usually called “over pressure”). Structures implode, roofs collapse. Not so good for humans either.
The head of Lebanon’s Red Cross said thousands of people had been injured and taken to hospital and that others were trapped in their homes.
A civil defence official said his men had evacuated dozens to hospitals and that there were still bodies inside the port, many of them under debris.
“Is there anything left of the city? This is at least the fourth time its blown up today.”
And one of the times was a nuke. Tough day for Beirut.

Yes. It was apparently ruled an ‘industrial accident’; but it had been routinely inspected and there didn’t seem to be any violations or dangerous practices.
They do appear to have had a couple of new young people working there.

In early 1970 I was in Qui Nhon, Viet Nam when the VC managed to get a lucky round into the ammunition depot. That thing exploded for 3 days. We were about 15 miles away, but it was still loud.

I don’t think Israel would do that. The Israelis know what they’re doing, and they would have known setting off a munitions warehouse would have caused massive casualties and pushed the ME even further over the edge - just at a time when Lebanon was getting it together to some extent.
Iran, on the other hand...
