Development of new Covid-19 vaccines is proceeding at a furious pace, which is good news for the world. We already have two vaccines in phase 3 trials in the US and Europe; each of these trials which will vaccinate many thousands of people, and then wait to see how many get infected. If the vaccines work, then in a few months’ time we’ll be able to start large-scale production.
But we don’t have to wait. Both of these vaccines (from Moderna and Oxford University/Astra Zeneca) have already been shown, in phase 1 trials, to be safe and probably effective. That’s why the companies are moving ahead and giving each vaccine to 30,000 more people: they are fairly confident that the vaccines are safe. The NY Times reports that 3 other Covid-19 vaccines are also in phase 3 trials: one from BioNTech and Pfizer, and two from Chinese companies, Sinopharm and Sinova Biotech.
So why not start administering millions of doses right now? We should.

My question is this:. If Covid-19 is in the same virus class as the Common Cold (Corona) and we’ve been working on a vaccine for the cold for the better part of a century now without success, what makes us think a vaccine against Covid will work?
My answer is No Sale. I will NOT take the vaccine.

Vaccines generally work only when the disease is ease to detect, and is not extremely infectious. Small pox was very easy to detect. And it was deadly. So it could be eradicated with use of the vaccine and water treatment as well. This took half a century and a world wide effort. That same effort has not yet wiped out Polio, although that one is close. The other diseases you mention show up in the US every year. We have cases of measles every year in the US. In 2019 we had over a thousand cases reported.
In other countries like China, there are huge groups of children who become very ill and even die after taking vaccines. The US drug makers test vaccines over a very long period before they are allowed to widely distribute the vaccine. And even when a vaccine is approved it is often associated with adverse reactions. HPV has caused more cases of ASIA as it supposedly reduced cases of cervical cancer. With 13 thousand cases of cervical cancer per year, we are causing 5000 cases of ASIA while reducing cervical cancer by 1000 cases. Not worth it.
Outside of a very few success stories, vaccines never equal eradication. They simply reduce a disease. In some cases they work for a year or two. In other cases they can provide immunity for decades. But with a virus like covid, vaccines can never hope to eradicate the virus from the world or even the USA. It will be here for a century at least.
Give me OTC access to Trump pills.

Smallpox killed 500 million people in the 100 years prior to it being eradicated by a mass vaccination program. The vaccine did not kill millions of anyone, let alone children.

Agreed. Thankfully, every vaccine except Hepatitis A and Rubella have ethically sourced alternatives. For SARS-CoV-2, many vaccine candidates have zero development using fetal stem cells, including two (GSK's candidate and Novavax's candidate) backed by the Trump administration with billions of Federal tax dollars invested.
China, Russia, India and the UK. Lots, and lots of people, very soon. C’mon Trump.
I say its safe to delay another month, let these countries be our Phase III. Just have plenty of doses ready for those that want the vaccine when approved.
right, phase 1 is the ‘it doesn’t kill you instantly’ trial. that is pretty much all it is for.
I would want several years follow-up safety data on any vaccine. Unfortunately, the way information is distorted and controlled on this topic, I suspect we most certainly are not going to be given this.
