CDC warns Congress of ‘significant public health consequences’ if schools don’t reopen in the fall

The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Congress on Friday of “significant public health consequences” if schools don’t reopen in the fall.

Millions of children get nutritional and mental health services at schools, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told a House Select Subcommittee hearing on containing the coronavirus outbreak. He said school reopenings to be done “smartly.”

“It’s important to realize that it’s in the public health’s best interest for K-12 students to get back into face-to-face learning,” Redfield testified. “There’s really very significant public health consequences of the school closure.”

About “7.1 million kids get their mental health service at schools,” he added. “They get their nutritional support from their schools. We’re seeing an increase in drug use disorder as well as suicide in adolescent individuals. I do think that it’s really important to realize it’s not public health versus the economy about school reopening.”

Our kids, generally, often rank below other kids in other developed nations in terms of aptitude. The last thing we need, is for them to fall even further behind.

The schools need to re-open, in person. Developed Europe and Asia are doing it...the United States certainly can do it too.

Keep the liberal politics out of public health...ALL public health.

So according to the all-knowing, all-powerful, all pontificating CDC:

School ISN’T about education.

School IS about nutritional assitance.

School IS about receiving behavioral and emotional support.

I live downwind of a CAFO pig farm and the smell is about the same.

Kids should go back to school.
For their mental health.
For their parents’ mental health.
And so their parents can get back to work.

What do the CDC and Congress have to do with state & local run entities?

The kids should go back to school without the masks. This whole scenario is so Hitleresque.

In Puyallup, Washington, a wonderful private school has classes beginning on Sept 14. Pre-school to 4th grade. https://puyallupperformingartsacademy.com/

If I were a member of Congress I'd laugh this CDC dipsh!t out of the room.

I'm of the mind that schools should remain closed indefinitely. If this COVID-19 outbreak is so serious that a state governor can unilaterally shut down business establishments with no due process on the part of the business owners, then schools should remain closed as well.

You can't be a fear-mongering @sshole in a governor's mansion and then act surprised when people start to take your fear-mongering at face value.

“School IS about nutritional assitance.

I believe CDC uses schools as one way to reach kids to exercise their responsibility - a tool to administer that which the administer - health and behavioral support. He also has been warning the youth suicide rate has been rising since the lock-down. When asked if he would send his children to school during the pandemic and he said he didn’t have any, but if so, he definitely would.

Remind me again what food stamps are for.

Or, Cool, we can stop giving out food stamps!

Absolutely. Kids are being frightened by a virus...and there is a new virus every year. What's different about this is that they quarantined WELL PEOPLE and I believe it would have run its course by now.

Instead...it created a second wave....just like Fauci said....and damn...it's almost like he planned it.

And now we're supposed to wear goggles?? Fauci is nuts.

The only ‘health’ impacts I see is that kids will have a lot more trouble obtaining contraceptives and girls will have a lot more trouble obtaining abortions without their parents knowing.

Other than that, it’s hard to see a health downside.

If kids can’t easily obtain contraceptives and girls can’t easily obtain abortions I see that as an upside.

Not sure yet.

What i’ve seen so far of their proposals is the kids would be treated like prisoners, way more than they normally are.

Our California school district is going to provide the free lunches while the kiddos home school. The lunches will be dropped off at two locations where the parents can pick them up from 11:30 to 1:00. One district employee will be at one location and a school board member will be at the other location.

Frankly, I think this is a real imposition on the parents. I mean expecting them to drive to pick up the free lunch! Really? That is just so unfair. The school district should contract with DoorDash to deliver the free meals to the kids. (yes, that last paragraph is me kidding!)

EVERY true liberal democrat was beyond willing to end these kids within the first 9 months of their existence. They’d even help do it. Of course they dont give a F about other peoples children. Its not in their capacity to do so.
