Bye, boomer: the coming cull of workers over 50
Marketwatch ^ | July 30 2020 | By Brett Arends

Uh-oh. Those of us who remember when ’80s music was new had better start bracing ourselves for those big-box-store greeter jobs earlier than we expected.

It doesn’t take a genius to see that the jobs market is probably heading for a massive, rolling shakeout. And that means plenty of employers may be using the cover of COVID-19 to get rid of lots of expensive older workers.

Age discrimination in the jobs market, which is supposedly illegal, goes up in recessions. Some employers take the opportunity to ax experienced workers who are paid a reasonable wage, and replace them with cheap, desperate kids who will put up with anything.

Get with the real world age discrimination is real very very real you see even if you have value for the business and improved your skills most places want someone that can do the job fairly well at a lower rate besides times have changed and so has the work ethic and customer service????
Forget about it

I used to be a sales rep for several companies. I saw a trend where the factory bosses were getting younger and younger. Then they started to replace older reps with reps in their 20’s and 30’s.

I got axed about 4 years ago because I was 20 years older than my boss. Despite the fact that I knew way more than he did. He had zero respect for what and who I knew. He wanted someone younger that he could push around. A real piece of work he is.

So, I “retired”, got my real estate license and went to work for myself. Screw corporate America. I am on my own and set my own hours.

COBOL developers are still in demand to support those old systems.

I know. That's why I said programmers sren't in the same situation. Even a seasoned programmer working in a different language knows how to deal with the same kinds of problems he has seen in the past in a manner a young programmer proficient in the language hasn't.

Success or failure hahaha. The individualistic ethic stops when the payroll looks a little heavier than management wants it.

If you had talked to me six months ago I would have been right there with you and then the hammer hit and my success years of success continued success, continued competency ,continue high achievement all went out the window when they re-evaluated their payroll

I hear you loud and clear.. you are so right have experienced that myself.

No I wonder why I tried so hard to be such an excellent employee I should have just coasted and then left hahaha but it’s okay I’m doing alright I’m just talkin about the reality of life.
Just because you talk about the reality and the reality isn’t very pretty doesn’t mean your “ blaming”.
It just means you see the world and people as it really is then and only then do you realize you have to take care of yourself and move on

It is not most places. Anyway, why would anyone want to work at a place that wants average? In my previous businesses I demanded excellence. If someone didn't want to rise to that level they where shown the door. It's business. It's not charity. Businessmen invest their life savings and lives into the their businesses. Basically, if you eff with my capital, you are gone. On the other hand, if you excel and make big profits you get rewarded, as in bonuses. One of the things I always took pride in was people leaving my employ to pursue a business on their own. They took personal responsibility for their futures. They took risk. That's American. Average is not.

“The cultural decay is a product of the boomers.”

The cultural decay is a product of leftist professors who didn’t vote for Reagan, carried out by the brainwashed Marxist millennials who have an average IQ of 50 or less.

Last job I left they had to hire TWO young punks to replace me

Same here. In my case, the punks were in India, so it was cheaper.

Agreed. I am an older worker but way too many at my age are demanding telework with no end. Sorry. It has to end.

They don’t want to hear us old heads tell them their whiz-bang ideas have been tried and don’t work.

When they get a look at the Millenial work ethic they’ll be back.

Time to ax H1bs entirely and seriously curtail legal immigration then since we clearly have a constricting labor market.

Disagree, they will try to hire twenty somethings who demand to use their phones when they should be working, whine when they are told to do a task, and throw a tantrum when they don’t get their way.

the cultural decay began in the 60’s, far before any millennial was alive. Sure, the millennials have carried the torch... but the boomers were the original porn guzzling, coke snorting, divorce-ridden, tv junkies...

Yeah, couple of older guys with nothing to live for and not much to lose could be a real issue if they decided to go Rambo.

“ I don’t know, this is definitely possible but the “kids” that have come through our place are horrible.”

I don’t hire from Ivy League schools. The applicants think they’re entitled, they are opinionated and disrespectful of authority. Give me a hungry kid who is a sponge and is willing to run through a wall to please the customer and I’ll take him or her every time.
