There has never been any love lost between Turkey and Greece, but the danger of war between the two NATO members has not been this high since the Cyprus conflict more than forty-five years ago. In the past, Turkey and Greece have gone to the brink, but policies initiated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan may very much push the two neighbors over the edge.
reek and Turkish fighter jets engaged in mock dogfights this week over the Greek island of Kastellorizo, just a mile and a half from the Turkish coast, causing tourists to flee. Meanwhile, there is a growing risk that the Turkish and Greek navies will clash, hundreds of miles to the west if Turkey pushes forward with its plans to survey for has in Greeces exclusive economic zone. Greek officials say that all options are on the table, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has rushed to mediate as U.S. officials remain largely absent.

Interesting thought for a couple of reasons, Syria for one, and the overall strategic objective of Russia since Peter the Great for control of the Bosporus and the passage to the Mediterranean for another. The latter is, of course, the reason Turkey is in NATO at all. The difficulties of U.S. support for either side in view of the other's NATO membership are profound (not to mention a couple of remaining U.S. military installations in Turkey) and I'm hoping keep us out of the thing. I'm seeing shades of 1914 and 1919 pass before my eyes and I don't like it a bit.
This could work for Greece. The US would sit it out and Russia would aid Greece against Turkey.
There would be hardship though but taking back Istanbul/ Constantinople could be the prize or is that a fantasy.
Don't laugh - these guys will kick your ass!
This year could be like a Thanksgiving accident. I could see the downfall of Greece, the overthrow of Turkey and the destruction of China!
My Dad fought with Turks and Greeks in Korea. (Different places.)
He said they were both tough, and just mean. He said he would fight with them any time.
The Turks got stupid about a few of the easternmost Greek islands a few years ago, and it continues to escalate.

1. The Overton Window of what is possible in just about every field is becoming more on an Overton Picture Window, or Perhaps an Overton Missing Wall.
2. Putin would love to be the leader who returned Constantinople to Christendom, even if the Russian Flag does not fly over it.
3. Erdogan has alienated himself from both the US and the EU.
4. Erdogan has both cooperated with Putin enough to sour his relationship with NATO, and alienated himself from Putin by clashing with him in Syria and Libya.
5. A defeated Turkey, humiliated, and completely alienated from the West, would be much more to Putin's liking than a stronger Turkey still nominally a member of NATO.
6. While I doubt he would let Putin take the Dardanelles, Trump might just tell NATO that put up, or shut down, time has arrived, and that the US is prepared to provide strong assistance, or walk away, but is not prepared to fight a NATO war with only token non-British support.
So, like a lot else, this has moved from the realm of fantasy, to simply extraordinarily unlikely.
The Turks and Greeks are a nasty people. And they hate America.
Greece was ruled by a communist family, the Papandreus (spelling?), with Andrew being more of a red then his father and his wife being another case of a western, possibly American Marxist married to a country’s leader.
They let the Soviets have run of Greece. Look up the case of freedom-fighter journalist Paul Anastasio and Sir James Goldsmith (the latter who I met and spoke to about KGB ops in Greece).
Greek communist ministers and key leaders included Greek CP member actress Melina Mercouri and musician Theodorakis.
As long as they kill each other and we don’t commit stupid and get involved; but if they knock on our door we just nuke them back to the stone age so they can go dick with someone their own size.
So Turkey is now going to take on both Egypt (no slouches themselves) and Greece at the same time?
How’s that going to work out?
“Greece was never there for us during the cold war.Soviets shot down flt. 007 on 1983. Greece called it a spy plane.”
Flight 007 wasn’t a spy plane. OH PLEASE, with that flight number?
“Has any country been booted from NATO? I honestly dont recall.”
Iceland left NATO, although I’m sure they weren’t booted - just not needed and not wanting to stay in.
It is indeed!
Using greece to cook turkey sounds good.
Turkey should have been kicked out of NATO in 1974, when they invaded Northern Cyprus.
Would you die for Turkey if Russia invaded Turkey?
Greece is pretty much a Russian colony now, since the Russians have invested heavily in Greece. They are Orthodox, although the Greek and Russian Orthodox churches are separate.
Hi.
“Would you die for Turkey if Russia invaded Turkey?”
I didn’t have a choice in 1977-78. Probably.
No, is the answer now.
