The Christopher Columbus statue in Grant Park was removed hours after Mayor Lori Lightfoot called for its removal.
Two cranes pulled their way up to the statue just before 2 a.m. Friday, after hours of vocal confrontations between protestors and supporters of the statue, including John Catanzara, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7.
The decision to take down two monuments to Columbus came after violent clashes between police and protesters broke out last week when activists attempted to tear down a statue of the Italian explorer in Grant Park.
“This statue coming down is because of the effort of Black and Indigenous activists who know the true history of Columbus and what he represents,” said Stefan Cuevas-Caizaguano, a resident watching the removal.
The monument was removed about 3 a.m. Crews were also preparing to remove another statue in Arrigo Park on the Near West Side.
Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) told the Chicago Sun-Times late Thursday that Lightfoot made “a unilateral decision” to take down the statues. Hopkins said the intention was to have them removed Thursday night.
“At this hour, there is discussion about postponing the removal, but the mayor has not indicated any reversal of her decision,” he said.
The mayor’s office didn’t respond to multiple requests seeking comment.

I have never been to Chicago but as an American with Italian ancestors, my father came from Italy at 6, I would never spend a dime there.
I will make sure none of my family spends a dime there. When they find out about this they will not.
I still want to know what an indigenous person is. does indigenous mean loser who can’t hold onto his land?
So what? The Vikings didn't do anything with their "discovery". It was basically a secret. Columbus deserves credit for discovering the Americas. He didn't find what he was looking for, but he found a lot more. And everybody knew it and headed west right after him.
So the sacrifice by all those police officers injured earlier this week protecting the statue was for naught.
How does anyone understand everything she says out of, “I am Groot!”??

Everyone knows that Columbus represents the Italian ethnic community in America.
Columbus Day is a de facto Italian-American holiday.
These moves tearing down Columbus statues are racist hate crimes aimed at all Americans of Italian descent. What’s next? Tearing down statues of African Americans like Martin Luther King?
Where will it end? Prohibitions against green beer on St Patrick’s day?
Destruction of tacos on Cino de Mayo?

I think the precursor to all of this was when they took down the statue of Kate Smith that was in front of the Flyers stadium. A woman who sang at the Apollo over 2 dozen times.

It might also be dependent on the health or longevity of a culture at the time of discovery.
That’s like saying the Germans discovered pi when in actuality pi was discovered 300 years earlier in India.
Discovery is discovery and when people unknowingly take credit for it is still discovery but only in the context of cultures that assumes sole proprietorship.
