The Seattle NHL team will be called the Seattle Kraken.
For months, fans have been debating what the name will be, with the Seattle Sockeyes often trending as the top pick.
The Seattle Kraken was also a fan favourite and ultimately became the top choice.
The announcement was made in front of nearly 300 construction workers Thursday morning who are building the new arena for the team.
“It’s only right and proper to announce the Kraken name, mark and colors here with the men and women working so hard and meeting every challenge to build our new home,” Seattle Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke said in a release.
“We were intentional every step of the way making this decision. We listened to our fans, thousands of them face-to-face and tens of thousands more on social media. We were determined to align with who we are as an organization and as a city and region.

I have never cared for singular mascot names like The Heat, The Thunder, The Dynamo, The Shock, etc. The only one I ever liked was The Crimson Tide.

Well the other popular polled name was Sockeyes which from my perspective Kraken beats. Kraken eat sockeyes for snacks.

At least an individual on the team could be a sockeye. An announcer could say “A group of sockeye are celebrating that goal”. What are they gonna say when “The Kraken” (Not “Krakens”) score? Or when 3 players get put in the penalty box? “Well, Joe there are three Kraken in the penalty box? I don’t know how they are gonna overcome this.”

Ok, I did not know that. I was under the impression that Kraken was the singular and Krakens was the plural. If that’s the case, then I ok with it.
That said, if they did call them the “Krakas” (since it is almost an entirely white sport) the riots would begin in 3...2...1...

True but I posted this out of general interest. Personally I don’t follow sports much anymore but I do check scores and standings still. Knowing the name of this hockey team is on the same level as knowing the name of the previous newest NHL team....Vegas Golden Knights.
