At least 14 people were killed Saturday in southern China because of seasonal rains and flooding.

Three floodgates of the Three Gorges Dam that spans the Yangtze River were opened as the water level behind the massive dam rose more than 50 feet above flood level, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The dam was holding back about 45 percent of the water, Xinhua said, citing China Three Gorges Corp.

Upstream, 11 people had been killed in Chongqing as of Saturday morning, China National Emergency Broadcasting said in an online report, citing the municipal emergency agency. More than 20,000 people had been evacuated and 1,031 homes destroyed.

Three landslides in Dunhao town in a mountainous part of Chongqing left six dead, the city’s Emergency Management Bureau said. The bodies had been found by Friday evening after more than 200 people were dispatched for a search and rescue operation. Rainfall in the town of Dunhao totaled 15 inches, the bureau said.

Three more people died in neighboring Hubei province, the emergency management department said in a social media post.

State broadcaster CCTV showed people cleaning up still wet, muddy streets and shops in the city of Enshi after severe flooding Friday. Rescue workers used inflatable rafts to rescue more than 1,900 people trapped in their homes and other buildings.

While I wouldn’t mind the CCP being washed away, I wouldn’t wish it on the regular folks in the danger zone.

Agree, totally, my FRiend. And I do hope for the best for those affected.

That said, if there were many people hurt by the storms and the Inadequate chinese Dam Construction, we should hold the line at no (as in ZERO) refugees here in our America.

If the Dam breaks, they will blame it on the United States.

The Communist Party of China will never take responsibility for it.

Do not give them ammunition.

I can see them quoting freerepublic posts as "proof".

When they were building this dam, I figured it would blow out sooner or later, especially considering Chinese quality control.

They still have a ways to go before it gets full, but Chicom steel and concrete make that pretty iffy.

Do you think that HAARP has something to do with the rain in China? If coordinated properly, longitudinal beams can either create low or high pressure zones in the atmosphere and affecting the weather one way or another. Well, just wondering.

Exactly.

It is always the ordinary folks who suffer from the actions - or lack thereof - of the people in charge.

All this 'bad news for the Chinese people' and yet not that many are dying is propaganda by China to make you feel empathy for the people and hence be less angry at the Chinese government for covid.

Think about it.

China had a host of professionals warning them about building the Three Gorges Dam with results now exactly as were predicted would happen when the rains came, the entire region was unstable to begin with.

....and there will be more events to follow without a doubt.

The ‘regular folk’ are just numbers, to the CCP. Like all communists everywhere, throughout history, they don’t care about individual *people*.

They only care about their Program.

The Three Gorges Dam was a model for disaster, yet Chinese companies are replicating this model both domestically and internationally.
