he University of Akrons Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to eliminate the jobs of 178 employees, including 96 unionized faculty, a law school faculty member, 60 staff members and 21 contract employees.
The employees salaries and benefits total $16.4 million, according to the university.
The move was part of the UAs plan to cut $65 million of its $325 million budget to offset losses in revenue incurred due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Another 84 workers also recently volunteered to resign or retire, for a total of 262 fewer employees, according to the university...

Very true. Among the unintended consequences of the pandemic response has been devastating impacts to colleges and universities.
Colleges and universities, even the state-supported ones, are independent business entities, which need to balance their budgets every year.
There is anecdotal evidence that record numbers of freshmen for this year are taking a gap year and will enroll next year instead. There’s also anecdotal evidence that big numbers of students were not going to return to college this fall if that means they will be taking only online classes.
Add it all up and colleges are going to have severe budget problems.
And among the ironies is that college age young people are among the least likely to become severely ill or die from this virus.
