Brookline Deli Owner Says He’s Getting Threats From Customers Who Won’t Wear Face Masks

BROOKLINE (CBS) – The owner of a Brookline deli said he’s getting threats from customers who are refusing to wear face masks in his restaurant.

Steven Peljovich, the owner of Michael’s Deli, said a small group of customers is making life hard by not respecting the rules and lashing out if they are asked to put on a mask or wait outside for their orders.

“It’s really hard when you are trying to run a business and you need all the revenue you can get, to try to accommodate people like that as politely as you can when they don’t even want to talk to you about it,” Peljovich said. “When you ask them to wear masks and they tell me I can go screw. That is not what they say, but it is what they mean – the language they use I can’t tell you. Or they threaten to never come back.”

Peljovich said customers have even thrown food at him. He’s asking everyone to be considerate and understanding during the coronavirus pandemic.

Tell that to the medical professionals. Tell them you are an expert and they dont need to complain anymore about not having enough PPE equipment because they dont need it to protect themselves.

Same principle. Ask why medical professionals want to wear face shields.

Face shields DO lessen the viral load.

As an example, the employee who just shot me with a load of germs would have not been as successful if done from the front versus from the side of my head.

That said, that shield certainly did protect me from getting some of it even from the side because it goes far enough back.

But hey, go head and tell medical professionals they dont need to wear face shields when treating covid patients.

The deli is still private property regardless of who's making the rules. As for the rule of law, as much as we may not like it, at the state level these sorts of (perhaps stupid) regulations in the name of public health are enacted all the time. I share with you skepticism as to the validity of such regulations, but it remains that the state and in some cases local municipalities have that power. Finally, we deal all the time with stupid laws, i.e., prohibitions on carrying firearms, but in general we don't pack heat illegally.

The massholes lecturing the deli owner, to be sure, are misplacing the direction of their vective. But the sanctity of private property should still be respected...you don't like masks, go to NH.

I never indicated that you did. I clearly indicated it was others with the sanctimonious attitude. However, I can’t quite agree that’s it is not feasible to never go out for MONTHS at a time. This virus is not going away and if they actually come up with some vaccine for Covid 19 it doesn’t mean that SARS is still not out there, H1N1, Influenza, Avian Flu, and the Common cold.

I work at a home improvement store. You can order anything there (and lots of things not in stock) without going out. Ditto the grocery store. Obviously you’re pinning all your hopes on a cloth mask and plastic face shield. Do you wear gloves too?
