Face shields DO lessen the viral load.
As an example, the employee who just shot me with a load of germs would have not been as successful if done from the front versus from the side of my head.
That said, that shield certainly did protect me from getting some of it even from the side because it goes far enough back.
But hey, go head and tell medical professionals they dont need to wear face shields when treating covid patients.

Just to be clear, with all due respect, we wear face shields when intubating patients because we are in the airway with the possibility of a strong voting reflex. This is much different conditions than anyone will face in public.
Some professional societies recommend a rapid sequence intubation with paralytics which is how I intubate patients. With an anesthetized and paralyzed patient there is no cough reflex and it preserves the safety for everyone in the room
