The New York Democrat insisted that the uptick in crime is unrelated to the new NYPD budget cuts New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested over the weekend that the crime surge in New York City is likely because struggling residents are forced to shoplift in order to "feed their child."
In a virtual town hall meeting she hosted Thursday, some clips of which were shared by The Hill, the 30-year-old Democratic congresswoman was asked about the troubling uptick in violent crimes overtaking the city.
“Do we think this has to do with the fact that there’s record unemployment in the United States right now?" she responded. "The fact that people are at a level of economic desperation that we have not seen since the Great Recession?"
"Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren't paying their rent and are scared to pay their rent and so they go out, and they need to feed their child and they don't have money," Ocasio-Cortez continued, "so they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry.”

Well, then, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez clearly hasn’t a clue what is happening in her district in the city of New York. Criminals need to stay in jail rather than running loose, shooting their way through the city.
If she had some clue regarding the events in District of Columbia, then she would support very strongly the efforts of our President to revive the economy and to drive unemployment back to record lows, especially among poor Americans of African and Latin American descent.
By the way, people who fail to pay their rent might have money, even thousands of dollars, adequate to purchase food for a real family even in the city of New York. Those whose jobs do not pay enough to afford a decent lifestyle in the city of New York should find a way to leave for a more affordable place with available jobs, which describes almost every city, town, and community in these United States of America except California, Hawaii, south Florida, and the District of Columbia and its suburbs.
