An explosion erupted as a roaring blaze was reported on a military assault ship at Naval Base San Diego Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Plumes of smoke arose from USS Bonhomme Richard as firefighters battled the three-alarm blaze on the 3400 block on Senn St. The vessel is an amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego, according to Krishna Jackson of Naval Base San Diego.
The ship had undergone a regular maintenance cycle before the fire was reported, Jackson said. Crew members typically are aboard the ship on weekends, but there are fewer than on weekdays.
Several sailors are being treated for injuries, according to the San Diego Fire Department. The extent of their injuries is unclear and authorities did not say how many sailors were injured.
It is unclear what sparked the fire.
It is unclear what who sparked the fire.
As a former Navy firefighter. Most ships are lost due to fire, not loss of watertight integrity.
The boats spraying water just pulled away, thats not good
Ouch. I imagine at this point the ship is a total loss as that is a massive fire. This sucks. Hope the sailors are ok and thankful no firefighters were injured.
Must be a lot or radiant heat coming off the hull. That can set your clothes on fire.
Those fire boats look like fleas on a bulls back, useless.
Anyone named McCain on board?
It's a big deal.
Thats a huge fire. Fox News is saying something about a welding accident.
Looks like a DDG on the opposite side of the pier. Couldn’t see if they were pumping water towards the BR. Weekend crews so how many DC are on board?
New large black plume coming out of the back end now
Why are there only two firefighting boats??
and of course Fox cuts away from it
I expect all the people laughing about how the Russians and Chinese have recently lost (at least until/unless repairs are effected) a carrier to fire in port and how it proves how bad they are compared to the USN to STFU now that we’ve essentially just done the same thing - amphib assault ships like the Bonhomme Richard are basically small carriers.
Accidents happen. “Idiot shipyard worker with a torch or welder” is not unique to one nation or another, nor does it prove superiority or inferiority.
Prayers for my shipmates on the BHR. Obviously, this was way beyond the abilities of the duty section fire parties. Watching the video, the fire has just spread. Thick black smoke now billowing from stbd aircraft elevator/hangar bay.
The fire boats looked completely ineffective in the series of still pictures.
Looked like lots of containers stacked on the flight deck.
Perhaps because that’s all they have/all they have crew for?
We can hope they removed the ammo.
