An explosion erupted as a roaring blaze was reported on a military assault ship at Naval Base San Diego Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Plumes of smoke arose from USS Bonhomme Richard as firefighters battled the three-alarm blaze on the 3400 block on Senn St. The vessel is an amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego, according to Krishna Jackson of Naval Base San Diego.
The ship had undergone a regular maintenance cycle before the fire was reported, Jackson said. Crew members typically are aboard the ship on weekends, but there are fewer than on weekdays.
Several sailors are being treated for injuries, according to the San Diego Fire Department. The extent of their injuries is unclear and authorities did not say how many sailors were injured.
It is unclear what sparked the fire.
Small arms for security only, but there’s still fuel onboard unless they didn’t refuel after the overhaul and prior to the current refit to be able to fly the F-35B off her deck.
Being reported that the Fitzgerald is docked next to the BR and being threatened by the fire. Bad luck ship? Just returned to SD after two year repair project.

Just checked - those fireboats are literally the largest fireboats that San Diego harbor possesses. They have five of them. I can’t find any information on any USN fireboats. http://www.capecodfd.com/pages%20special/Fireboats_CA_San-Diego_FB_1.htm
Exactly what I was thinking.
That was Casey James Fury, who did more than $400 million worth of damage to the USS Miami (SSN-755) back in 2012. Mr. Fury's plan was to get out of work early by setting fire to some rags in a bunk area.
At the close of his trial, he was sentenced to 17 years in prison, and also to pay $400 million in restitution; the second part of that sentence looks to me like the Navy letting its well-known sense of humor slip out.
It was 2013: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/mar/15/uss-miami-military-submarine-fire-sentence
Sigh. Most sailors do feel that there is such a thing as a “Bad luck ship”.
The USS JFK had her share of collisions, accidents, and shipyard fires. She actually had a bunch of them over a few years, and it was found to be a shipyard worker IIRC.
Various talking heads/airhead anchors are butchering the name “USS Bonhomme Richard” (ron-home bishard) and in one case referred to the amphibious assault ship as an “assault rifle ship”.
I think I recall a John Paul Jones ship with that name. (Maybe I’m wrong.)
I have heard from more than one sailor that the JFK was a “bad luck” ship.
Hope the manage to tow the Fitz away before the fire gets to it.
Norfolk? Newport News?
You’re right.
“As a former Navy firefighter.”
When my career Navy father was stationed at Great Lakes, the early 1950s.
Occasionally he would take us to a graduation ceremony(?), where they had huge open-top tanks with fuel oil burning inside. They had bleachers set up at a safe distance.
A team would line up outside feeding hose to the front and others spraying water on the front of the team, and they would enter the tank and extinguish the flame!!!
Amazing.
Years later I learned from Navy friends that the EPA SHUT IT DOWN!
It was replaced with a smaller set up inside a containment with air scrubbers to clean the smoke.
They said they still do it.
Nothing I would want to be involved with, even when I was young and crazy.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh at that post about getting the Fitz away from it!
2 DDGs and Independence class LCS and replenishment ship.
This ship is the namesake of that one. Many ships that distinguished themselves well will have their names used by replacement ships when the original gets scrapped, and the most significant names continue in commission. It’s why there has been a long series of US military ships named Enterprise.
Chinese?
Hezbollah?
Iran?
Or some ANTIFA/BLM mad sailor stowaway?
If, that is, the crew can't get her underway on her own...
I can't believe anyone would just surrender that kind of (re) investment!
TXnMA
Welding accident my foot.
“yes,,sailers running away now”
And hw do you know that?
Reported on the SDFD’s scanner, which is online.
