Army's 'Captain America' dies by suicide after nearly a dozen combat tours

The enemy could never break him, but what this decorated Green Beret eventually found was that his enemy was within. Friends who served with him in the military say he was the real “Captain America.”

Master Sgt. Andrew Christian Marckesano served six full tours in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne and the Ranger regiment and a half dozen more combat tours overseas. He rose to become a decorated Green Beret and a Silver Star recipient. He had just moved to Washington, D.C., to start a coveted job at the Pentagon. Two days after the Fourth of July on Monday night, after having dinner with his former battalion leader, Marckesano returned home from dinner in Old Town, Alexandria, and died by suicide in front of his wife. He had three small children and was still on active duty.

His death sent shock waves through the military. His friends, family and military leaders were at a loss. Many told Fox News that Marckesano never got over his tour in Afghanistan's Arghandab Valley in 2009 with the 2-508, a battalion that had one of the highest casualty rates of any unit during the war. “That deployment was like being in the ring with Mike Tyson for a year,” according to the battalion’s former Command Sgt Major Bert Puckett.

He sent a passionate appeal this week to the rest of the battalion: “Text me, I told you before my door is open... my phone is at hand. We did things that people make movies about and in some cases, writers and producers wouldn’t even try to write our story... the rucksack is heavy... and when it gets heavy we [&$#*] help each other, but you have to reach out... Don’t let the Valley win.”

What about the demons he left for his wife and children?

Selfish.

Going by his last text and act, you could tell he was too proud to ask for help and that his message to others was the only way his pride would let him approach the subject. JMHO.

Still, he had a lot to live for. Even in these insane “eeee! wear your mask!” times. I can’t begin to imagine what he was going through.

I could try, but then I would also have to try and live through the horrors his poor wife and three small children are having to live through now as they deal with what he did to them.

You’re an ass. A flaming hemorrhoid infested ass.

If I believed in doxing I’d make sure a few of this mans friends were able to track you down.

Lucky for you I don’t.

The hero could not have done anything more selfish. I understand the demons but he knew enough to seek help. (Retired Army officer)

Yes selfish but also cruel to suicide in front of his wife, that strikes me as a hateful act. It's sad all around for him, his wife and children who have to carry that memory for the rest of their lives and with it the question they will be asking themselves............was it their fault.

This tragedy makes me wonder what his former battalion leader said to him during their dinner.

Oh did I hurt your little feelings? You seem angry. I hope you’re never angry, bitter, hateful, nasty and ugly enough to do what this guy did. I can’t think of anything more worthless and gutless and cowardly than to do what he did. I’m sorry if you think suicide is honorable especially leaving a wife and three small children. I am very sorry for you.

I haven’t been in our military, but I have spent a fair amount of time with those who have been in the service recently. Unless you experienced what he did, you simply cannot understand what he was going through, and why he killed himself. It is easy, sitting in the cheap seats that you are now in, to call this hero a coward and a loser, but you really just don’t know - and, as a result, you should have kept your views to yourself.

As for me, I mourn that we have driven such men to do such things, and I offer my condolences to his family. They may never get over it - and your words not only don’t give any comfort to them (if they will ever read them), but they deepen their grief. Shame on you!
