Donald Trump has celebrated independence day with a string of false and misleading claims attempting to play down the coronavirus pandemic and warning that China will be held accountable.
The US president staged a Salute to America jamboree on the south lawn of the White House with flyovers by military jets, parachute jumps and patriotic songs, but little effort among guests to physical distance or wear face masks.
The country has undergone staggering changes unthinkable when Trump hosted the first such event a year ago on 4 July with tanks and other military hardware at the Lincoln Memorial. The coronavirus has infected 2.8m Americans and killed nearly 130,000, the worst tallies in the world.
Saturdays national celebration was inevitably more subdued, but the president refused to let the pandemic or dismal poll figures rain on his parade, waving with his wife, Melania, from a White House balcony then walking the south lawn to ripples of applause and a cry of: Four more years!
We got hit by the virus that came from China, the president said, prompting a strange whoop and applause from someone in the audience. Weve made a lot of progress. Our strategy is moving along well. It goes out in one area, it rears back its ugly face in another area. But weve learned a lot. Weve learned how to put out the flame.
The number of infections now regularly tops 50,000 per day, higher than in April when the US was in the first grip of infections. Dr Anthony Fauci, the nations top infectious diseases expert, warned this week: I think its pretty obvious that we are not going in the right direction.
Trump returned to his now familiar and baseless complaint that America has a high caseload because it performs more tests.

Stats for my county as of a couple of days ago were about 32,150 people have been tested and there have been 1441 confirmed cases. Out of those 1441 cases, 90 were hospitalized, and 19 died. Based on those stats, if you consider the non-hospitalized cases to be harmless, that would be 94% harmless. But a lot more people had the virus that those 1441 who were tested and confirmed, so the “harmless” rate would be even higher.
50,000 cases and 244 deaths nationwide yesterday. Sounds like less than 1%.
Hes not wrong.
And it would be even higher if it wasn’t for Benito Coomo sending all those poor seniors off to die in those New York nursing homes..

tired... no offense meant MG.
Well, a tad bit of research by The Guardian would show that there is about a 99% cure rate. Ergo, the President would be correct......Again.
I believe the CDC knows the numbers will come out. They are putting minor stories and obfuscating them with medical jargon. They put out a number that about 10 times the number of reported cases may have been infected and gotten over it without medical intervention, I don’t remember the name of the CDC director that said it. But they have put on their website “Seroprevalence” data on six specific areas with time frames. They used samples from commercial medical labs taken for non covid reason, and is much closer to a random sample and tests if the samples show the person developed antibodies (had the disease at some point). The results ranged from 6 times to 24 times the diagnosed cases with most areas being about 11 times. If the real number is about 10 times the number of diagnosed cases, that means the nonfatal cases are about 99.5%. Trump would be vastly closer to the truth than the media, and every professional in the CDC either knows or is derelict.

“Infections surge” is meaningless, possibly even helpful, in the absence of more deaths.
I hear experts saying these viruses tend to mutate to be less severe.
10 or 11 times the reported cases also means that the epidemic is about to suddenly fall off a cliff as there will be fewer people to infect.
Maybe DJT will prove right again.
On July 6th the U.S.A. had 379 deaths and 50,586 new cases. That says the mortality rate is .75%. I would say that Trump is correct.
The Guardian. A truly dreadful newspaper. Nauseatingly smug, self righteous, and the most left-wing of the formerly ‘quality’ dailies. Their loathing of conservatism is matched only by their hatred of their own nation.
They genuinely had a headline in 2018 which read:
ROADS DESIGNED BY MEN ARE KILLING WOMEN.
Maybe the media(D) might consider a little fact checking of themselves. Of all 4,462,250 active cases worldwide, 4,404,375 (99%) are in mild condition, while 57,875 (1%) are seriously or critically ill.

While we have had extremely low deaths and minimal infections here in Australia I tell people there is no guarantee we are doing the right thing. It may be proven within the year that slow exposure to a waning virus will be the best remedy. Especially if the virus mutates but immunity remains in those who have already been exposed. Time will tell!

OMG. That headline is like a bad parody.
