NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley will skip President Donald Trumps presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in August due to coronavirus concerns, a spokesman for the senator confirmed on Monday.
The 86-year-old Iowa Republican has attended each of his partys conventions since he was first elected to the Senate in 1980. His decision not to travel to Florida for this years event underscores broader concerns about holding mass gatherings as coronavirus cases there surge.
Im not going to go because of the virus situation, Grassley told reporters on Monday, according to a report in the Des Moines Register.
The bulk of the Republican convention was moved from North Carolina after the states Democratic governor, Roy Cooper, would not commit to allowing a full convention because of pandemic concerns.
Some 330 delegates will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Aug. 22-24 to nominate Trump as the Republican candidate to take on Democrat Joe Biden in the Nov. 3 election. The more than 2,000 remaining delegates will perform a ceremonial vote on Aug. 24-27 in Jacksonville, Florida, to confirm the nomination, according to the Republican National Committee.
The decision to relocate to Florida was made prior to the states recent spike in coronavirus cases, which have grown from 667 new cases on June 1 to more than 10,000 new cases on Monday.

The first of many of GOPe going AWOL. The GOPe want the convention to fail and will do what they can to make it happen.
Did that post make you feel big and important. You might be a fat a$s, but you’re sure not important.
He’s 86...that alone is sufficient and likely most people understand what that means. He’s already explained well enough.

He’s a United States Senator. If he can’t do his job he needs to resign.
I know; I’m over 70.
Live free or die.
If you can’t run with the big dogs it’s time to retire to the kennel.
“Did that post make you feel big and important”
Why, yes; yes it did.
“You might be a fat a$s, but youre sure not important.”
What even does that mean? Step away from the Stoly bottle.
Hes 86. Nuf said.
Not for some folks here.
Depends on what you mean by "high". With precautions his risk of contracting is very low. If he gets COVID then his risk of death is low since he is healthy. By low I mean 5% or less. He may not consider that to be low, and I can understand that.
I know a couple of people in their 80's who were positive with no symptoms. One 85 year old woman who had two weeks of HCQ and other treatments and did ok. There are people who might not like a 1 in 10 case mortality risk, or who are not healthy and can be excused for staying away.
I was really hoping Grassley would just come right out and say: I will not be attending the GOP convention because Ive got front-row seats for the Metallica concert that night! :-P
It would be really smart to retire and give an opportunity for a younger Republican.
He’s concerned about the rioters.
Grassley does a good job and most importantly he votes the right way.
And after forty years in office you should be out of there any way.
I guess I use Mom as a baseline. She’s 96, lives her life, goes places, wears no mask, from “sturdy New England stock”.
I guess I shouldn’t consider her situation; everyone is different.
He’s pretty old. Probably a good idea.
